GRADE : Hourly rate based on Grade 50

FLSA : Non-exempt

REPORTS TO : School Bus Coordinator & Transportation Director

SUPERVISES : None

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT : 10 months (part-time)

QUALIFICATIONS :

Graduation from High School or equivalency
Must be at least eighteen (18) years old with six (6) months' driving experience
Must possess or be immediately eligible for and maintain a current North Carolina commercial driver license with proper endorsements and a current Bus Drivers Pocket Card
Must pass DOT drug and alcohol testing

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. The employee is required to follow Board of Education policies and procedures and to comply with the instructions and / or directives from his / her supervisor(s).

Assists the bus driver with the safety, movement, management and care of the children boarding the school bus, leaving the bus, or being transported.

Seats self in an area on the bus to ensure observation of all passengers at all times and make sure they are following school bus and safety rules.

Assists the school bus driver in reporting infractions of school bus safety.

Is aware of problems between students and keeping those students separate by assigning seats.

When working on a school bus equipped with a wheelchair lift, operates the lift for loading and unloading of wheelchairs and also ensures that the wheelchair is properly secured on the school bus.

Is responsible for securing students who ride in child restraint seats, etc.

Attends school bus safety meetings.

Assists bus driver with pre-trip and post-trip inspections

Maintains a high standard of student conduct at all times.

Assists driver in keeping the bus clean and inspect for damages and repairs on a daily basis.

Ensures that a child takes his / her belongings with him / her when departing the bus.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.

Maintains acceptable relations with parents / guardians of students transported and with school personnel

PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE REQUIREMENTS : The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the School Bus Monitor job classification within Martin County Schools.

Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to :

Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch

Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions

Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception

Visually inspect small defects and / or small parts

Use a variety of measuring devices

Assemble or fabricate parts at or within arm's length

Operate machines, motor vehicles, hand tools, and job specific equipment and tools determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work

Observe general surroundings and activities

Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels

Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas

Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may be require specialized personal protective equipment

Understand and follow oral and written instructions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
