General Statement of Job

The position of Automotive Technician is responsible for performing specialized, skilled journey-level mechanical and technical work in the maintenance and repair of Sheriffs’ vehicles as well as other related vehicles and equipment. Incumbents exercise considerable independence in diagnosing drivability, repairing deficiencies, and verifying proper performance. This classification may inspect completed work and provide mechanical and technical assistance. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Manager and is subject to a quality control inspection.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:

The duties of the Automotive Technician include but are not limited to:
- Trouble-shooting and repairing vehicles, ATV’s, trailers, trucks and specialty vehicles
- Schedules vehicles for routine maintenance
- Drives the tow truck on and off call
- Assists other units of the MCSO including but not limited to towing disabled departmental cars and seized vehicles.
The Automotive Technician must have vast electrical and powertrain knowledge. The technician is on call to assist with disasters such as hurricanes. The technician will be called upon to assist in installing radios and other equipment in vehicles as well as perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Duties:
May instruct or teach other individuals in the department as necessary.
Assists in the cleanup of shops when requested.
Assists the Fleet Maintenance Department as needed.
Minimum Education and Training
High School Diploma and a minimum of ten years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Associates Degree preferred.

Preferred Skills:
Advanced knowledge of electrical systems, engines, suspension and troubleshooting.
Physical Demands:
Tasks are performed inside and outside, typically requiring heavy lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying heavy loads.
Work Environment:
Work conditions are generally stable.
Removal:
Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency. Economic conditions that cause reductions in work force, the member’s inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks are among the major reasons for job removal without fault. Failure to support the agency’s mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in a manner that supports the Sheriff’s Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions for original employment, or to display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons will lead to removal with or without fault. In addition, accruing atypical amounts of dysfunctional work time or requiring atypical amounts of supervisory counseling or remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault.
