General Statement of Job
The part-time Grounds Maintenance Civilian is a very responsible position requiring cautionary awareness while performing varied assignments and routine maintenance of all Sheriff’s Office grounds. Responsibilities will bring jobholder in close contact with incarcerated inmates and other detainees and will require considerable judgment, initiative, and cognizance of surroundings. Jobholder will work under the guidance of the Grounds Maintenance Deputy, both of whom report to the Special Services Sergeant.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Responsibilities require consistent attention and commitment to the agency’s mission. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient, and safe manner. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote this organization’s mission and comply with its directives. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public’s trust or confidence in the agency or its members. Successful performers are those who are capable and willing to make decisions that are consistently in line with the agency’s mission, goals, and objectives.
This position requires a safety-conscious individual tasked with assistance in supervising the overall operation of Sheriff’s Office grounds maintenance and special details requiring inmate labor. Must possess good work ethics to ensure maintenance needs and other requests are accomplished in a timely and efficient manner. Jobholder must maintain a high degree of safety, care and accountability of manpower, tools and equipment used in performing job functions. Individual must possess a high level of problem-solving ability, and the ability and willingness to work without direct supervision. During natural disasters, accident scenes, or major crime scenes, the jobholder may be required to provide back-up assistance in the absence of the Grounds Maintenance Deputy.
Other duties include but are not limited to:
- Safe handling and storage of all equipment, toxic and flammable material used in the performance of job functions
- Assist with inspection of locks, grills, doors, and gates as required at Correctional Facility to ensure proper function and facility security
- Assist Rapid Response Team with travel arrangements and logistics, storm prep and clean-up
- Supervise cleaning and upkeep of workout areas
- Pressure cleaning of exterior walkways and concrete areas as/when needed
- Procure maintenance items as needed and/or requested
- Deliver and set-up office equipment, furniture and supplies as requested
- Assist with agency and community events to include prep, clean-up, and monitoring if/when needed
- Maintain clear and consistent communication with Grounds Maintenance Deputy when in the presence of incarcerated trusties during performance of work responsibilities
Minimum Education and Training
High School Diploma or GED; knowledge of lawn equipment and various tools helpful but not mandatory.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License
Physical Demands:
Frequent stooping and bending required, as well as manual dexterity, fine motor skills and the ability to grasp objects. Position requires color perception and the ability to see, hear and speak.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a controlled and occasionally high stress environment. Jobholder is expected to work varied hours and/or shifts which may include nighttime and weekend work.
Removal:
Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency. Appointment is at the will of the Sheriff. Economic conditions that cause reductions in work force, the member’s inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks are among the major reasons for job removal without fault. Failure to support the agency’s mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in manner that supports the Sheriff’s Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions for original employment, or to display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons will lead to removal with or without fault. In addition, accruing atypical amounts of dysfunctional work time or requiring atypical amounts of supervisory counseling or remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault.
