Martin County Transit, a division of Senior Resource Association, is seeking a Vehicle Mechanic to keep our fleet of transit vehicles in peak condition. This role is essential to ensuring passengers reach their destinations safely and on time.
About the Role:
The Vehicle Mechanic performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline-powered transit vehicles. From routine inspections to complex diagnostics, this position helps ensure the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of the MCT fleet. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fleet Manager and in collaboration with the maintenance team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled repairs on buses, vans, and support vehicles.
- Diagnose and repair vehicle systems, including engines, brakes, HVAC, electrical, and hydraulics.
- Conduct road calls and perform field diagnostics or minor emergency repairs.
- Operate diagnostic tools and maintenance software to document all repairs and inspections.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace in accordance with facility standards.
- Communicate mechanical issues promptly and assist in identifying long-term solutions.
- Ensure compliance with DOT, FTA, and organizational safety standards.
- Support inventory tracking and assist with parts ordering as needed.
What You Bring:
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years of experience in fleet, heavy-duty truck, or transit vehicle repair.
- Previous experience with diesel engines and diagnostic tools required.
- Transit maintenance experience preferred.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong mechanical knowledge of vehicle systems and repair techniques.
- Proficient in reading schematics, service manuals, and using repair software.
- Basic computer skills for recordkeeping and diagnostics.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Clear communication skills and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, crouch, kneel, and work in tight or elevated areas.
- Comfortable working in loud, hot, or outdoor environments.
- Ability to respond to emergency service calls and work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends.
Education & Certifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid Florida CDL (Class B) with Air-brake Endorsement.
- DOT Medical Certification required.
- ASE Transit Bus Technician Certification preferred (or must be obtained within 6 months of hire).
- MOT Certification preferred.
- Must pass DOT drug/alcohol screenings and a Level II background check.
- Must meet employment eligibility through the Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA).
