Job Summary
The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Sailfish Sands Golf Course works closely with the Golf Course Superintendent to ensure that the golf course is maintained to the highest standards. The assistant superintendent will assist in managing the grounds crew, implementing agronomic programs, and ensuring the overall condition of the course. Responsibilities include turf care, irrigation management, pest control, and equipment maintenance. The position requires strong leadership skills and a solid understanding of golf course maintenance practices, with a focus on delivering exceptional playing conditions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Course Maintenance: Assist the superintendent in overseeing all golf course maintenance operations, including mowing, irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and landscape upkeep. Ensure that turfgrass, greens, fairways, and bunkers are maintained to meet high-quality standards.
  • Staff Management: Supervise and lead the grounds crew in daily tasks, providing direction and training as needed. Coordinate schedules and assignments to ensure efficient operation and proper course conditioning.
  • Irrigation Management: Oversee the irrigation system, including operation, repairs, and adjustments. Ensure proper water usage and efficiency to maintain healthy turf. Troubleshoot and resolve irrigation issues promptly.
  • Agronomy Programs: Assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive agronomic programs, including soil testing, fertilization schedules, and pest management strategies. Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and best practices.
  • Pest and Weed Control: Implement and monitor pest control programs, applying chemicals as needed to protect the turf from disease, insects, and weeds. Keep accurate records of chemical applications and ensure adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Assist in the maintenance, repair, and operation of golf course equipment. Ensure that all machinery is in good working order, performing preventive maintenance and repairs as necessary.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure that all employees follow safety procedures and that the course meets local, state, and federal environmental regulations. Conduct regular safety training for the grounds crew.
  • Inventory and Supplies: Assist in managing the inventory of supplies, including fertilizers, chemicals, seed, and equipment parts. Coordinate with vendors and place orders as needed to ensure the timely availability of materials.
  • Course Improvement Projects: Work with the superintendent on course improvement projects, including renovations, new plantings, and upgrades to the irrigation system. Ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Weather Monitoring: Monitor weather conditions and adjust maintenance practices accordingly. Be prepared to respond to weather-related emergencies, such as frost, flooding, or storms.
  • Reporting: Provide updates to the superintendent on course conditions, staff performance, and maintenance schedules. Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, chemical applications, and equipment usage.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Turfgrass Management: Strong understanding of turfgrass science, including pest control, fertilization, aeration, and soil management.
  • Irrigation Systems: Knowledge of irrigation system design, operation, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate a team, ensuring efficient and safe work practices.
  • Agronomy: Knowledge of agronomic principles and environmental sustainability in golf course management.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify and resolve issues related to turf health, equipment malfunctions, and course conditions.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong focus on maintaining high-quality playing conditions, with attention to aesthetics and overall course presentation.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills to interact with the superintendent, grounds crew, and other staff members. Ability to give clear instructions and feedback.
  • Technology: Proficiency in operating turf management software and other relevant technology for tracking maintenance activities and managing irrigation systems.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities, ensuring that daily, weekly, and seasonal maintenance goals are met.
Education and Experience
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in turfgrass management, agronomy, horticulture, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in golf course maintenance, with experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Experience with irrigation system management, chemical application, and turfgrass care is required.
  • Previous experience working on a golf course in Florida or a similar climate is desirable.

Certifications and Licenses
  • State Pesticide Applicator's License or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Certification from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) or similar organizations is preferred but not required.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, crouch, and use hands to handle or operate tools and equipment.
  • Ability to operate mowers, tractors, irrigation systems, and other turf maintenance equipment.
  • May need to work early mornings, weekends, and holidays depending on course maintenance schedules and weather conditions.
