Position: Treatment Plant Operator I/Trainee
Martin County Department of Utilities and Solid Waste
Schedule: Monday - Friday - 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Pay: $20.00 /hr.
Location: Tropical Farms located @ 8595 SW Kansas Avenue, Stuart, FL 34997
Must be able to pass criminal background, drug testing and MVR check
This will be a contract position with reSource Government Services and not a direct hire position with Martin County.
SUMMARY:
Specialized skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the water and/or wastewater treatment facility. Responsible for safe and efficient operation of equipment used in purification process of the public drinking water supply conforming to all regulatory agency requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Regulates rate of flow to process units, chemical feed equipment and backwash filters when necessary.
- Maintains chemical inventory and equipment.
- Maintains data logs and prepares operating reports; maintains proper water pressure and storage tank levels.
- Performs clerical and manual work necessary for clear, concise reports and fluent operation, including maintaining accurate shift logs and laboratory determinations.
- Informs relief operator and Chief Plant Operator of mechanical defects and other areas of concern observed while on shift.
- Performs work related to this job description as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

- Knowledge of methods and practices of a water and/or wastewater treatment facility and of standard and normal operating procedures applicable to treatment.
- Knowledge of functions and mechanics of pumps and other plant mechanical equipment.
- Knowledge of ramifications of improper wastewater treatment on community health and well-being.
- Ability to inspect machinery and other mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation.
- Ability to read meters and charts accurately, to maintain simple records of shift operations and to perform simple chemical analyses accurately.
- Ability to adjust treatment procedures to satisfy requirements of varying flow volumes to be treated and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school, vocational school supplemented with courses in chemistry and mathematics or equivalency diploma.
Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.
Possession of a current Class "C" certification as a Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator as issued by the State of Florida.
Preference will be given to operators with a minimum of a "C" license; however, MCU will consider operator trainees with preference given to applicants with:
- Some knowledge of the operating characteristics of a water/wastewater treatment plant.
- Some knowledge of hydraulic, chemical, and mechanical principles applicable to water/wastewater treatment plant operations.
- Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain records of shift operations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Possession of a valid Florida Class "E" driver's license.
