Purpose & Description

The Apprentice Boat Captain is a member of the lake crew who is responsible for working with a small, 2–3-person team to install or repair boat docks and / or accessories. The installs or repairs could include repairing or installing decking, steel and aluminum frames, metal roofing, boat lifts, or floats as well as moving docks in or out of the water. The work is accomplished by using a modified pontoon boat to travel across lakes, rivers, etc. to access the boat dock. Quality dock service is completed while growing in skill and professionalism, in a positive team environment. The Apprentice is a semi-advanced skill position and in training to transition to a Journeyman-Boat Captain. Apprentice works with assigned Boat Captain but directly reports to the Service Manager.

Skills & knowledge

  • Advanced skill with use of hand tools, including power tools and techniques that are appropriate for the area(s) of specialization.
  • Moderate knowledge in 1 and basic knowledge in all other Service areas below (See Service Area Skill Summary) :

Welding and Fabrication

  • Decking and Carpentry
  • Boat Lift Installation
  • Dock Moving and Transport
  • Basic knowledge of the Journeyman Boat Captain
  • Intermediate diagnostic skills.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures.

    • Tasks & Activities

  • Work without direct supervision.
  • Assist the Boat Captain, in training Level I and / or Level II technicians.
  • May be occasionally required to fill in as Journeyman Boat Captain.
  • Work with Boat Captain to complete punch list.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in assigned truck, trailer, boat, equipment, jobsite, and shop / yard areas.
  • Operate a water vessel.
  • Properly move a boat dock.
  • Transport material and / or equipment.
  • Remove and / or install decking.
  • Weld and / or fabricate.
  • Provide direction on procedures requiring expertise in a specialist area.
  • Know when to wear protective and safety equipment.

    • Judgement & Problem Solving

  • Exercise judgment or work methods and task sequence within specified timelines and standard practices and procedures.
  • Provide factual advice which requires proficiency in the work area rules and regulations.
  • Must maintain a calm, respectful manner, and attitude always.
  • Must never use disrespectful, foul, profane language. Must always use modest and decent language and gestures.
  • In stressful situations, you will maintain a calm demeanor and follow the direction of your Captain or Service Manager.

    • Physical Requirements / Environment & work setting

  • Requires standing, sitting, bending, and repetitive motion.
  • Requires hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Requires lifting / moving a min. of 50 lbs. repeatedly through an entire work shift. Excellent stamina is required.
  • Required to speak and listen.
  • Requires wearing proper safety and protective equipment when applicable.
  • Requires contact and / or face-to-face discussions.
  • Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Exposure to chemicals, hazardous equipment, minor burns, cuts, bites, or stings.
  • Requires working indoors and outdoors in an uncontrolled environment.
  • Requires traveling by water on a water vessel.
  • Requires good balance while working on a boat dock while it is moving and / or rocking.

    • Education & Experience

  • Requires High School Diploma or equivalent education or experience.
  • Requires at least 1 (one) year of on-the-job training or 2 (two) years of prior experience, or any combination.
