The Lawncare Technician at Grunder Green is responsible for beautifying Ohio’s lawns and landscapes by applying fertilizers and pest/week control products that promote healthy growth of turf, plants, trees, shrubs, and other landscaping plant material. The Lawncare Technician completes all required lawn applications, assesses the overall health of the property, and solves customer problems related to disease, weed, or pest prevention and elimination for plant materials. The Lawncare Technician will also determine if any additional services are required and will obtain the necessary information to prepare a quote for the services.

The Lawncare Technician’s services are provided to residential customers within an assigned territory, or to assigned customers. The Lawncare Technician builds strong relationships with customers, continually educates them, and readily seeks out ways to help promote the beauty and value of their outdoor environment.


This position reports to the Director of Lawncare and does not supervise any employees.

Knowledge, SKILLS, and Abilities

Required:

  • Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to build rapport with others
  • Observational and analytical problem-solving skills, including an eye for spotting potential lawn or landscaping issues early on and the ability to accurately assess the problem and identify the specific solution
  • Ability and desire to communicate and interact with others professionally, to please customers, and to express sincere concern for customer needs
  • Meet with customers and potential customers to carefully inspect, diagnose, and/or verify lawn weed/pest-related problems. Advise customers of facts and solutions. Educate customers on irrigation and mowing techniques, cultural practices, and health, safety, and environmental issues.
  • Apply fertilizers and related products to lawns and plant materials according to label requirements.
  • Monitor progress of applications to ensure effective results. Follow up with any additional necessary corrective or other action.
  • Research information, when necessary, to verify weed, growth, or pest related problems.
  • Respond to customer service calls and follow up with customers to ensure problems have been solved satisfactorily.
  • Continually build relationships with customers and, at all times, promote excellent customer service, quality work, integrity, and professionalism.
  • Pro-actively identify lawn/plant development needs that promote the healthy growth of the turf and of plant materials. Offer suggestions and follow through, as needed.
  • High school education diploma or equivalent.

Preferred:

  • Previous lawncare or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of common regional plants, fertilization techniques, irrigation, different turfs, lawn diseases, weeds, and outdoor pests

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid Ohio driver’s license that is not currently suspended or revoked (driving record must meet the insurance carrier’s policy requirements and Grunder Landscaping Co. driving standard
  • ODA License will be required to operate GrunderGreen truck sprayer and spreader.

Position Duties and Functions

  • Meet with customers and potential customers to carefully inspect, diagnose, and/or verify lawn weed/pest-related problems. Advise customers of facts and solutions. Educate customers about products and applications, irrigation and mowing techniques, and health, safety, and environmental issues impacting their lawn, plant beds, and plant materials.
  • Mix and apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides to lawns and plant materials according to label requirements. Monitor progress of applications to ensure effective results. Follow up with any additional necessary corrective or other action.
  • Research information, when necessary, to verify weed, growth, or pest related problems.
  • Respond to customer service calls and follow up with customers to ensure problems have been solved satisfactorily.
  • Continually build relationships with customers and, at all times, promote excellent customer service, quality work, integrity, and professionalism.
  • Pro-actively identify lawn/plant development needs that promote the healthy growth of the turf, plant beds, and of plant materials. Determine if additional services are needed.
  • Safely operate equipment and perform safety checks and daily maintenance of all equipment. Prepare the truck for daily service stop, including but not limited to loading supplies, equipment, and products, and obtaining any necessary customer documentation. When returning to GLC at the end of the day, unload the truck and ensure all company supplies, equipment, and products are secured.
  • Acquire and maintain a current commercial applicator license.
  • Attend all required meeting or inspections pertaining to relevant jobs.
  • Stay abreast of current industry trends, regulations, technical data, new products, safety standards, equipment, and others.
  • Communicate to management client's property conditions and other field issues. This includes but is not limited to informing management of any customer issues or concerns that are not completely resolved to the satisfaction of the customer and reporting any damage that occurs as a result of treatment.
  • Complete assigned account documentation tasks using a company-provided mobile tablet.
  • Operate and maintain assigned equipment to perform applications.

Other

  • Assist with other routes as needed or specific customers as assigned.

Perform all other duties as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS

Requires frequent contact with customers, and coworkers. Work is performed outdoors, with exposure to all weather elements. Exposure to fertilizers, grasses, weeds, outdoor plants, and associated products and chemicals. Work involves constant use of industry equipment, materials, and products. Work involves daily travel throughout the community and work area.

This position requires full-time hours Monday through Friday, in addition to extended workdays, overtime, and weekend work as needed. This position also requires regular, punctual attendance. All work for this position must be performed on-site at GLC customer properties or at GLC company offices.


SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

Must possess ability to operate lawn, fertilization, and weed/pest prevention/elimination equipment including, but not limited to: backpack sprayer, measuring wheel, hand-sprayer, commercial dry fertilizer lawn spreaders, lawn hoses, irrigation equipment, hand and carpenter tools, truck equipment, safety equipment, and others. Must be able to operate a vehicle and mobile tablet.
