Position Title: Student Housing Manager

Job Classification: 12-month employee

Reports to: Director of Student Housing

Position Summary:

Following the lead of the Director of Student Housing, the Student Housing Manager shares responsibility for the international student program within the school.

Philosophy:

Martin Luther High School is seeking a Student Housing Manager.   • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
  • Leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with and maintain positive relationships with staff, students, and families
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work productively both as a member of a team and independently
  • Strong attention to detail

Essential Job Functions:

International Housing Employee Management

  • Manage the resident assistants, including conducting regular meetings with resident assistants.
  • Trains, mentors, and supports Resident Assistants (RAs) in conjunction with the Director of Student Housing.
  • Evaluates the performance of the RAs in conjunction with the Director of Student Housing.
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings with the Director of Student Housing, and when necessary, Director of World Cultures Program.

Student Management

  • Ensure students are held accountable to the Student Housing Agreement (and resident handbook).
  • Participate in evening and weekend duty coverage on a rotational basis with other designated professional staff.
  • Develops and implements strategies to address the developmental needs of specific student populations in line with LHSAGM mission and vision.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with both residents and student housing staff that encourage on-going communication, mutual support, and respect.
  • Maintains office hours to allow opportunities for students to discuss issues, challenges, and problems they may have.
  • Assists with opening and closing of the residence halls.
  • Ensures students are acting and abiding under U.S. law and in accordance with the LHSAGM brand, mission, vision, and core values. Any deviance from this is communicated in a timely manner to the appropriate party (i.e. law enforcement, parents, school, LHSAGM, etc.) and the appropriate discipline is administered.
  • Solves student-to-student problems arising with roommates, suitemates, and other student residents.
  • Oversees student check in/out of the dorm for school, security, cultural experiences, trips, visits, extra-curriculars, school activities, etc..
  • Ensure students are cleaning their room, suite, and other areas as assigned on a regular basis.
  • Enforces quiet hours and visitor hours.
  • Ensure that students are behaving appropriately and respectfully during all hours of the day.
  • Follows Confidentially Rules and Procedures.
  • Privacy
  • Respect the medical privacy of students and ensure confidential medical information is not disclosed without proper authorization and consent.
  • Provide medical information only on a “need to know” basis and only when acting within the best interests of the students mental or physical health.
  • Consult with other housing staff when appropriate and especially in critical situations, including the Director of Student Housing.
  • Working within the limits of professional capabilities, assists students who have academic, spiritual, and personal concerns. Make appropriate referrals when necessary.
  • Manages situations involving various psychological, emotional, medical, or other safety related emergencies or incidents in the residential community.
  • Builds community in buildings by maintaining a regular presence.
  • Be available at odd hours (outside of “normal” work hours).

Student Cultural Assimilation

  • Supervises student behaviors and intentions to ensure the providing of a safe, respectful, and enjoyable living experience.
  • Understand international students and education as well as the various cultural challenges and differences that exist.
  • Have respect and understanding for cultural differences while integrating the students into the culture and structure of LHSAGM.
  • Identifies and creates opportunities for students to attend church on Sundays, youth group during the week, and bible/worship time at Martin Luther or in the student housing building.
  • Assists students in assimilating them to U.S. culture and living in student housing through instruction, activities, and discipline.
  • Encourages students to participate in after-school activities, spiritual life activities, and student housing activities.
  • Coaches students to balance their priorities appropriately (coursework/friends-time/extra-curriculars/travel/etc.).
  • Encourages and facilitates cultural experiences and opportunities.
  • Ensure that students follow proper safety procedures.

Communication

  • Communicates to Director of Student Housing about any maintenance or IT issues observed or known.
  • Communicates with the Director of Student Housing to establish a safe and secure living environment for all student residents.
  • Communicate with dorm doctor and local medical providers to schedule doctor visits, discuss student diagnoses and treatment plans, and return to school plans.
  • Communicates to the Director of Student Housing about any concerns or events arising where emergency action is needed.
  • Communicates with parents and guardians of student residents, including permissions to travel and leave campus with other adults.

Additional Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Housing.
