POSITION SUMMARY
The Education Specialist is a skilled and experienced professional to support all aspects of the MLKCH non-clinical education programs. This includes designing, developing, implementing, evaluating, and continuously improving education programs aimed towards interpersonal skills, teamwork, communication or aligning attitudes with organizational values; process improvement, rapid cycle techniques, Highly Reliable Organization [HRO] principles and any programs impacting employee skill building in leader processes to effectively lead teams, coach for performance, crucial conversations, annual goal setting and measurement of results. This role is integral to advancing our organizational mission and realizing our strategic theme to measurably drive quality improvement in patient care, specifically through creating and delivering compelling and relevant learning experiences. The position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Community Hospital (MLKCH). It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospitals strategic plan and the goals and direction of the quality and performance improvement process activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participates as member of the Education Department to achieve annual MLKCH
- Supports HR OD Director with broad MLKCH initiatives.
- Communicates assigned project milestones to the Director Education and Professional Development and key stakeholders.
- Particular attention is expected when receiving direction for developing performance objectives of learning events in conjunction with the department Operations leaders and progress toward delivery of agreed end date of all assigned projects.
- Role models expert practice through consistent introduction of benchmarked best practices and employing learning methodologies appropriate to type of competency the employee is expected to demonstrate.
- Process owner and facilitator for General Hospital Orientation and ensures speakers, participants and Education Dept personnel understand the date, time, agenda and complete evaluation for this program.
- Ensures all non-clinical departments conduct annual competency assessment and complete evidence of required competency validation pertinent to role assignment.
- Participates on hospital committees as assigned by the Director of Education and Professional Development.
- Serves as a consultant to the specified non-clinical areas and departments as it relates to identifying best practices, integration of evidenced based knowledge, needs assessment and determination of learning needs and performance gaps. Cultivates positive and collaborative relationships within the Education Department and with all MLKCH personnel. Seeks feedback from participants in every learning event. Conducts summative or formative evaluations to drive improvements in the delivery of the learning event and demonstrates to the organization participant feedback is necessary. Develops action plans with the Directors in the specified clinical areas to ensure that learning event content is being incorporated into practice.
- Ensures appropriate competencies are completed timely in alignment with the MLKCH Hospital Orientation Policy (Policy # PDE-1009).
- Participates in the annual educational needs assessment process with all the Clinical Educators and assists with the review of data and annual program planning.
- Utilizes adult learning principles in program planning to select the teaching strategy and method appropriate for the learner and the content including e-learning.
- Plans for all aspects of programs offerings: marketing of programs; curriculum development, objectives, handouts, speakers, continuing education credits, room(s), food, and support in presentation designs as needed for the specified non-clinical areas.
- Ensures all learning event criteria are entered into the Learning Management System within 7 business days of a learning event. Delineates current practice level or gap in performance through consistent surveillance of MLKCH data (Quality-PI, Risk, Safety, Accreditation or Regulatory). Incorporates this analysis in all curriculum design and establishes performance expectations to be measured at completion of learning event.
- Coordinates the implementation of all programs for assigned departments. This includes obtaining external experts, gathering necessary knowledge/equipment/tools, sponsoring the learning event, learning evaluations and compensation as needed.
- Utilizes the Education Department program forms for all programs and summarizes data and makes recommendations for future programs.
- Closes all learning event records within 7 business days of (final) date offered.
- Under the direction of the Director of Education and Professional Development, works with academic partners to ensure affiliation agreements are up to date. Works with school clinical coordinators to approve clinical rotation requests. Ensures student orientation content is up to date. Clears students to be onsite.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education
- Bachelors Degree in Instructional Design, Education, or other related field, i.e Organizational Development, HR Training and Development. Masters degree preferred. Candidates with at least five (5) years of training and development experience, or related, will be considered in lieu of degree.
B. Qualifications/Experience
- Minimum of three years of directly related work experience.
- Detailed knowledge of the concepts, practices and procedures of the Instructional Design and Development field
- Ability to guide Adult Learners with strategies to engage learners in reflection of life experience, stimulate critical inquiry, critical thinking, and problem solving to influence developing competence in learners.
- Demonstrated experience working with e-learning authoring tools.
- Knowledge and familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) to support data entry, document uploads, and running completion reports.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
- Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish)
- Computer skills required: Microsoft Office Suite
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) within 60 days of hire.
