The Microbiology Lab Assistant is responsible for the pre analytics work processes and auxiliary duties, which include specimen processing, clerical duties, inventory management, pre-sample testing preparations, samples loading, answers phone calls and computer entry tasks. The Microbiology Lab Assistant also assist in other tasks that are essential to preanalytic processes meeting the department’s quality criteria (accurate and on time). The job itself requires attentiveness to the needs and the demands of the CLS microbiologists, and able to respond accordingly, in order to keep the daily workflow and services on time. Listens and responds to constructive feedbacks, such as suggestions and corrections and be able to adapt to changing situations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Specimen Processing: Prepare specimens for laboratory testing or refer to outside laboratories when necessary.
- Pre-Analytical Procedures: Perform pre-analytical tasks, including setting up microbiology plates for testing.
- Pending Log-In Management: Regularly check and update the pending log to ensure timely processing of all specimens and associated tests.
- Result Verification and Sending: Check for completed results, verify accuracy, and send out the results to the appropriate recipients in a timely manner.
- Supply Management: Order, restock, and manage laboratory supplies as directed by the Microbiology lead/supervisor.
- Clerical & Filing Tasks: Carry out filing and other clerical duties as assigned by the Microbiology lead/supervisor.
- Workplace Maintenance: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Communication: Ensure appropriate communication with coworkers, hospital personnel, and physicians, fostering a collaborative and professional environment.
- Lab Information System (LIS) Management: Accurately enter data and demonstrate proficiency with the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Telephone Etiquette: Uphold professional telephone manners and ensure effective communication.
- Additional Duties: Assist with other tasks necessary for the smooth operation of the microbiology section.
- Clinical Skills Maintenance: Continuously update and maintain clinical skills, specific to the age group of patients served (Neonatal, Pediatric, Adult, Geriatric).
Project Assistance: Provide support for additional duties or special projects as assigned
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education
High School Diploma or equivalent.
B. Qualifications/Experience
- 6 monthsexperience in microbiology
- Proficient with LIS and computer applications.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge
- Strong interpersonal skills demonstrating Family Centered Care and organizational skills. Proficient with computer.
- Experience working with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), and Adobe required; experience with Visio preferred.
- Ability to work under pressure and to maintain efficiency and composure
- Strong organizational skills
