Museum Research Assistant

The Pharmacy Museum Research Assistant supports the Marvin Samson Museum for the History of Pharmacy’s mission by conducting historical research, researching and cataloging the collection, assisting with exhibit development, and contributing to educational programming related to pharmacy history and practice. This role combines elements of museum work, pharmaceutical knowledge, historical research and scholarly work.

This position offers a unique opportunity to combine with historical research in a museum setting, contributing to the preservation and interpretation of pharmacy history for public education and engagement.

This is a part-time position at about 20 hours/week. This position is effective for a one year term.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Conduct research on pharmacy history, medicinal artifacts, and related topics using primary and secondary sources
• Assist in cataloging and maintaining the museum's collection of pharmaceutical artifacts and documents
• Aid the Assistant Curator in the maintenance and operation of the museum’s collection including packing, storing and moving the collection.
• Support the development of new exhibits by researching content and helping to create interpretive materials
• Contribute to educational programs and tours, providing accurate historical information to visitors
• Assist with the preservation and conservation of historical pharmacy items
• Help maintain the museum's research library and archives
• Collaborate with staff on special projects and publications
• Assist in grant writing and funding applications for research projects
• Assist in writing papers, opinions and other scholarly works.
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Required:

• Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in health sciences, pharmacy, history, art history, museum studies, or a related field
• Strong research and writing skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
• Familiarity with museum databases and cataloging systems
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Preferred:

• Graduate work preferred
• Experience with public speaking or education programming
