Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assists the DON in the planning, development, organization, implementation, evaluation and direction of the day-to-day functions of the nursing department, in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern the facility.
- Confers with the DON in assessing the quality of nursing care delivered and recognizes the need for continuous improvement in nursing practices.
- Represents the DON as needed when the DON is unavailable or as requested.
- Acts as on-call nursing clinical resource person, as scheduled.
- Makes daily rounds to evaluate patient care, progress of individual employees, to monitor nursing practices and to assist personnel with nursing and educational needs.
- articipates in the development, maintenance and updates to written policies and procedures governing the day-to-day functions of the nursing department. Assists to ensure Policy & Procedures manuals are updated as necessary.
- Assists with evaluation of employee performance and assesses the need for progressive disciplinary action. Participates in employee conferences as requested by the DON.
- Ensures all nursing service personnel follow their respective job descriptions. Participate in developing, maintaining and periodically updating job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
- Establishes and facilitates effective employer/employee relations.
- Assists with daily staffing schedules to ensure adequate and safe staffing necessary to deliver nursing services but keeps within the predetermined par level staffing ratios.
- Interview and hire nursing assistants according to facility policies.
- Participates in the CQI audits of nursing practice and in the plan of correction when deficiencies are notes.
- Participate in the weekly risk meeting to identify, discuss and analyze potential risk issues to implement new interventions and update plan of care.
- Conduct weekly wound rounds with the interdisciplinary team to assess and develop care plans for residents with wounds.
- Assists to ensure the nursing assessments, care plans and care cards are completed/updated in a timely manner.
- Compiles end of the month reports to be submitted to the DON.
- Assists with the development, direction, participation and evaluation of the orientation program for nursing personnel and recommends changes or additions to the orientation program.
- Performs administrative duties such as completing medical record forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc. as needed.
- Help to ensure that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the rights and needs of the individuals served by the facility.
- Acts as a liaison for residents, families, visitors and staff to resolve concerns and issues, always with the goal of customer satisfaction.
- Concerns self with the safety of all residents and staff to minimize the potential for accidents, infection and fire. Also assists to ensure facility adheres to the legal, safety, health, fire and sanitation codes by being familiar with ADON’s role in carrying out these plans and by being familiar with the current MSDS.
- Remains cognizant of the legal aspects of nursing practice as well as government regulations. Demonstrates this in teaching supervision and evaluation of patient care.
- Assists to ensure reference materials (i.e. Drug Reference books) are maintained and current, at the nurses’ stations. Recommend to the DON any written material needed that will assist the nursing department in meeting the day-to-day needs of the residents.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current RN License in the state of MA.
- Three years of long-term care supervisory experience preferred
- Ability to successfully relate and respond to the needs of management, employees and residents.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with people from all levels of the organization, residents and their families, visitors, etc.
