The primary purpose of the Staff Development Coordinator/Infection Preventionist is to plan, organize, develop and direct all in-service educational programs and infection control practices/policies through the facility in accordance with application federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations as directed by the Director of Nursing and Executive Director, to assure that the highest degree of quality resident care can be maintained at all times.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Plan, organize and implement orientation and training programs for all newly hired employees; maintain documentation of the program and attendance for each employee.
- Conduct educational needs assessments for staff, train on new policies and procedures, quality initiatives, infection control and equipment use, and include other departments’ staff as appropriate.
- Review clinical data and observations from rounds that could serve as indicator of staff needs for education and training.
- Ensure competency evaluation of all new employees upon hire and annually.
- Assume the authority, responsibility and accountability of directing the in-service training programs.
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, coordinate, and direct the facility’s infection control program in accordance with current rules, regulations, and standards.
- Monitor infection control practices and procedures to ensure that all personnel are complying with acceptable standards of practice; instruct staff in infection control standards and practices.
- Develop, maintain and periodically update infection control policies and procedures regarding precautions and aseptic practices that successfully correct problem areas.
- Make routine rounds in all departments to review environmental sanitation procedures as well as to supervise isolation/precaution practices.
- Participate in surveys as needed of possible carriers among residents, patient, staff and visitors to trace possible sources of infection within the facility.
- Coordinate the ordering of items that are needed for infection control purposes.
- Ensures that resident and patient immunizations are documented as up to date and if not, administered with proper consent.
- Maintain line listings of infections that may indicate an “outbreak’ and coordinates the control effort with the Director of Nursing and Executive Director. Follows all protocols or reporting and containing “outbreaks”.
- Assist is setting standards and promote the morale of all employees and maintain a spirit of cooperation.
- Participate in the development and implementation of the procedures for the safe operation of all nursing service equipment, ensuring all staff operate nursing service equipment safely.
- Participate in inspections (survey) made by authorized government agencies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current RN or LPN License in the state of MA required.
- Must be certified as an Infection Preventionist.
- Maintains current applicable trainings and certifications.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with people from all levels of the organization, residents and their families, visitors, etc.
- Knowledge of industry related patient are issues and regulations.
- Ability to maintain a high level of patient satisfaction and knowledge of effective patient care techniques.
- Possess good clinical knowledge required in care of elderly.
- Strong interpersonal/communication skills.
