What are the responsibilities and job description for the Courtroom Clerk position at Maryland Courts?
The courtroom clerk is responsible for performing all clerical functions of the courtroom. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to preparing the courtroom for proceedings for Judges or Magistrates; administering oaths; assisting in the jury selection process; maintaining and tracking exhibits; communicating with parties, chambers and the office during proceedings; keeping accurate records of court proceedings; completing the necessary paperwork to distribute to the appropriate parties; maintaining information and documentation for the court record and agencies; and entering documents and outcome of proceedings into the electronic file. Performs all other duties as assigned, including office assignments (answering phones, assisting customers at the counter, processing pleadings in File & Serve and tasks queues, etc.), verification, and scanning.
Prepares courtroom for proceedings; calls court; maintains record of court proceedings; calls cases in non-criminal courtrooms; receives and catalogs exhibits; performs roll call for jury selection and maintains jury documentation; administers oaths; completes hearing sheets for court events; and completes paperwork necessary for distribution.
Enters documents and outcome of proceedings into Odyssey and processes paperwork created in the courtroom; processes pleadings in File & Serve; tasks queues; handles tracking and return of exhibits; prepares for future court dockets; maintains supplies in the courtroom. Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to assisting other departments, verification, and scanning.
Education: High School diploma (or GED equivalent).
Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
Note: A Bachelor?s Degree may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal/Associates Degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of court forms, practices, procedures, protocols, systems, legal terminology and equipment required to support the specialized work of the assigned unit(s).
Skill in operation of computer terminals and related software, typing on a personal computer, managing priorities to meet critical deadlines while multitasking. Effective written and oral communication.
Ability to acquire knowledge of and make work related decisions using Maryland Judiciary Rules, procedures, practices, and policies. Apply obtained knowledge to define problems, collect data, establish facts, record data, appropriately complete forms, and provide information to co- workers, internal and external customers. Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with co- workers, internal and external customers, and court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing. Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and policies for any given assignment. Multitask, adjust to situations quickly, set priorities, and handle pressure in a fast- paced environment. Work within time constraints, meet fixed deadlines, and demonstrate good organizational skills. Handle sensitive or difficult situations requiring discretion and confidentiality. Exercise independent judgment and address situations that arise unexpectedly, with or without the assistance of a supervisor. Understand and carry out complex verbal and written instructions. Pay attention to detail. Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with co- workers, internal and external customers, and court officials and personnel. Ability to perform all essential functions of the position.
