The State Highway Administration’s (SHA) Office of Materials Technology is currently recruiting for an Aggregate Laboratory Team Leader (Transportation Engineer V) located in Anne Arundel County. This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below by the closing date. This is a position specific recruitment. Nature of Work: The Aggregate Laboratory Team Leader will report directly to the Assistant Division Chief of Laboratory Operations in the Soils & Aggregate Technology Division. This position will be responsible for management of the Aggregates Laboratory Team, consisting of permanent and consultant staff. This is an operation management position in the field of aggregate material evaluation used in highway construction and design. The Aggregate Laboratory Team Leader will provide leadership and direction to the employees and develop strategies for improvements with the team. This position will also apply management techniques, engineering theories, and applicable policies and standards to a variety of efforts as they relate to materials designated for highway construction and to operational improvement. The main focus of this position is to ensure that aggregates testing is completed on time and within budget using the resources available. As a technical lead, this position will be expected to review all work conducted by the team and have the ability to recognize errors or concerns and the responsibility to ensure corrections.

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience in professional engineering.
Selective Qualification: Two and a half (2.5) years of the required experience must have involved performing field data collection or analysis, or quality assurance materials testing.
*This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or abilities).
Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
• Knowledge in aggregate and/or soils laboratory management, standard specification and test data management and analysis
• Knowledge of lab equipment used to measure index properties of aggregate, aggregate related materials
• Ability to partner with industry and national/regional technical teams to identify and resolve issues, to assure the quality of aggregate materials used in construction properties
• Ability to troubleshoot material testing and application problems related to performance in the field
• Excellent oral and written communication and team management skills
Notes:
1. Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
2. Possession of a Master's Degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
3. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the State of Maryland, or in a State with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.Candidate must possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the state of Maryland.
