Nature of Work: The Regional Planner (RP) position in the Regional and Intermodal Planning Division (RIPD) serves primarily as SHA’s liaison to a specific region’s local government, including municipal, county, and regional jurisdictions. This position communicates information to and from stakeholders about SHA’s projects throughout project prioritization, programming, planning, design, right-of-way acquisition, construction, operation, and maintenance. The Regional Planner serves as a primary SHA point of contact for local governments that may seek funding and implementation assistance from SHA for their transportation priorities, programs, and projects. Generally, the Regional Planner supervises one Assistant Regional Planner, an entry-level employee, who assists in the day-to-day coordination and liaison activities. This position is also responsible for on-the-job training, assigning/reviewing work, and the overall development of the team.

Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Six (6) years of experience in administrative staff or professional work. Selective Qualification: Three (3) years of experience must be in transportation planning.

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should possess the following:
- Knowledge of MDOT’s Consolidated Transportation Program, the annual consultation meeting “Tour,” and SHA’s capital program development processes
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state metropolitan planning laws, regulations, processes, and procedures
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.
4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher-ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Employees in this position must be able to work outside of core business hours to represent SHA at meetings and/or to perform other work-related duties.
