The State Highway Administration's (SHA) Office of Materials Technology (Anne Arundel County) is currently recruiting for a Senior Geological Engineer (Transportation Engineer IV). This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy or function only. You will need to reapply for any future recruitment conducted for this job classification.
Nature of work: The Senior Geological Engineer will conduct subsurface contamination remediation design, water quality assessments, vibration characterization, other environmental studies, rock cut slope design and rehabilitation, and ground modification design for karst sinkhole mitigation. This position serves as the point of contact between SHA and other state agencies for projects related to groundwater and potable water quality and construction/traffic generated vibration. This position reports directly to the Lead Geological Engineer within the Engineering Geology Division and manages all coordination with testing laboratories as well as groundwater quality and vibration related investigations. This position develops plans, specifications, and estimates related to bedrock excavation, rock cut slopes, sinkhole mitigation and subsurface contamination remediation. This position also reviews roadway designs, plans, construction, and maintenance work in order to investigate, monitor, evaluate, and report on groundwater, environmental and vibration conditions to ensure identification of hazardous materials, prevention and mitigation of groundwater and soil contamination, and contractual compliance.

Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college
Experience: Four (4) years of experience in professional engineering.
Selective Qualification: One (1) year of the required experience must have involved environmental evaluation related to soil and groundwater contamination, environmental site assessment, bedrock excavation or rock cut slope design.*A Selective Qualification is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective Qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or ability).
Preferred Qualification:
The ideal candidate should have the following:
- Professional Engineer license
- BS/BA in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering Natural Sciences such as Geology or Hydrogeology
- Ability to obtain Certified Public Water Sampler-MDE
- Possess or able to obtain Maryland Department of Environment certified drinking water sampler certification
- One or more years of experience of using field water quality testing equipment such as pH meter, Chlorine meter, TDS, etc. and construction vibration monitoring equipment such as seismograph
Notes:
1. Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
2. Possession of a master's degree in engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience.3. Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the state of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.
