Maryland Office of the Attorney General
Baltimore, MD Full Time
POSTED ON 2/25/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/23/2025

DESCRIPTION:

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. The Office of the Attorney General is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Assistant Attorney General in the Independent Investigations Division (IID).

The IID is charged with investigating police-involved incidents that result in the death of individuals or injuries likely to result in death. If the Attorney General determines that the investigation provides sufficient grounds for prosecution, then the IID has exclusive authority to prosecute the offense.

The Senior Assistant Attorney General will be part of a team of dedicated lawyers, investigators, paralegals, and other professionals who investigate, evaluate, and where appropriate, prosecute cases arising from police-involved fatalities. This position will serve as an investigative attorney and lead senior trial counsel for cases within the division. The Senior Assistant Attorney General will be responsible for complex cases involving police-involved shootings, in-custody deaths, vehicle fatalities, and use of force. The incumbent will draft and present case findings, draft and present criminal charges, and represent the State of Maryland in the handling of all stages of prosecution. The Senior Assistant Attorney General will engage with external stakeholders and partners, including the Maryland State Police.

The applicant must be comfortable with completing special projects as needed and working with diverse groups, including community groups and law enforcement. The position requires work outside of normal business hours and travel throughout the State, including participation in the IID on-call response schedule. This position requires strong skills in criminal litigation, legal research and legal writing, with a focus on best practices, resourcefulness, sound investigative measures and senior-level prosecutorial techniques. This position requires commitment to the missions of the OAG and IID, which includes actively working to enhance transparency and strengthening public trust in the criminal justice system.

Experience

The ideal candidate will have at least seven years of criminal investigation and litigation experience in white collar crime or organized crime. The successful candidate will have excellent research, writing and oral advocacy skills. Special consideration will be given to candidates with substantial prosecution experience. Experience as first-chair in a felony jury trial is preferred but not required. Current or pending admission to the Maryland Bar, or the ability to immediately waive in without delay is required

Submission

Interested persons must submit a cover letter, resume and original writing sample via email to: Allison Green, Division Chief, via agreen@oag.state.md.us and to Rebecca Kreh, Paralegal via rkreh@oag.state.md.us by close of business on Wednesday March 12, 2025. Please write “AAG VII-IID” in the subject of the email.

EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS:

The successful candidate will be eligible for subsidized health benefits (medical, prescription, dental and vision coverage) and life insurance; leave, including annual (vacation), personal, sick, and paid parental leave; and will be eligible for participation in a contributory defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after ten years. State employees are eligible to participate in two supplemental retirement plans: the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and the 401(k) Savings and Investment Plan. The State also offers a free mass transit benefit for local bus and express bus services.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER: The OAG is an equal opportunity employer that encourages all interested persons to apply regardless of race, color, religion or belief, ancestry, national origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, disability, pregnancy, family or parental status, veteran status, genetic information, or any protected category prohibited by local, state or federal laws.
