Planetarium Production Assistant (Part-Time)

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

Maintains visual integrity of Planetarium public, school and special event programs; assists in the production of all Planetarium programs (public, school, special event); oversees production and presentation of school programs and development and distribution of teacher activity packets; performs duties, both programmatic and administrative, that contribute to departmental and MSC function.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Maintains visual integrity of Planetarium public, school and special event programs:

o Assures that all Planetarium theater imagery meets high standard of quality

o Uploads and program digital imagery to the planetarium system

o Works with Producer and technical staff to resolve theater technical problems

Assists in the production of all Planetarium programs (public, school, special events):

o Contributes to program conceptualization, design and storyboarding

o Helps to research, write and edit Planetarium program scripts

o Assists in creation of new Planetarium programs

Performs duties, both programmatic and administrative, that contribute to departmental and MSC function:

o Serves as astronomy information resource to public, teachers and students

o Assists in operation of Observatory and events

o Remain current on current space science and astronomy topics

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

• Physical sciences, especially astronomy

• Planetarium production and presentation techniques

• Computer use, standard office software and Internet research techniques

• General familiarity with the production process for an animated show. Editing skills ideal, but not necessary

• Comfort & familiarity operating a computer

• Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite - Photoshop, Premier Pro, Audition, etc. or similar programs

• Public speaking

Abilities:

• Be creative in a team production capacity

• Work independently and part of a team

• Learn other behind-the-scenes technical work

• Lift up to 30-40 lbs. (telescopes)

• Work in low lighting situations

• Climb stairs

• Use computers for extended periods of time

• Operate telescopes

Education: College degree in science, education, animation, audio/video production, or related field.

Experience: 1-3 years in Planetarium field, animation, audio/video production, or related field.

Basic Requirements: Must be able to pass background check

Supervision Received: Digital Systems Manager

Compensation: $15/hour

Hours: 15-20 hours per week

FLSA Status: Non-exempt
