General Summary : The Senior Supervisory Veterinarian is responsiblefor all aspects of daily clinical, medical, and surgical care of the Zoo'scollection. This position oversees thedaily care of the hospitalized and quarantined patients by the Hospital Keeperteam. This position manages the public health program and infectious diseasemanagement for the Zoo, and oversees the student programs, including theCranfield Summer Research Intern. The Senior Supervisory Veterinarian reportsto the Senior Director of Animal Health, Conservation and Research, and collaboratesclosely with the Hospital Clinical Manager to provide backup coverage for theother hourly hospital staff. Additionally, the Senior Supervisory Veterinarian will support the Zoo's conservation, sustainability, education and DEAI (Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion) goals.
EssentialFunctions : PrimaryFunctions :
- Ensure comprehensive day to day medical and surgical care of the collection;
- Oversee and execute the medical and daily care of the hospitalized and quarantined patients, including collection patients, wildlife, and other non-collection patients in conjunction with the hospital keeper team;
- Manage the quarantine program and uphold all quarantine protocols for the Zoo in conjunction with the Hospital Keeper team;
- Responsible for organizing the veterinary components of incoming animal shipments in collaboration with the Taxon Curators;
- Responsible for the oversight and implementation of the veterinary student externship program and the Cranfield Summer Research Internship;
- Oversee implementation of the Employee Health Program and serve as the veterinary liaison to consult on issues of employee health, zoonoses, and public health as they relate to our staff, guests, and the collection;
- Oversee planning, implementation, and revision of infectious disease outbreak protocols and response for the Zoo;
- Maintain compliance with the veterinary components of USDA regulations and AZA standards and all state veterinary regulations and federal DEA regulations;
- Participate in veterinary collaboration with outside institutions;
- Participate in the Animal Recapture Team;
- Actively participate in conservation and research projects supported by the Zoo's conservation program;
- Provide medical and surgical care to wildlife patients when presented to the Zoo;
- Oversee the Zoo's role and execute the health study of the Northern map turtle project and other conservation projects as assigned;
- Support the Zoo's mission to save wildlife and protect wild places and contribute to its environmental, social, and governance sustainability goals;
- Promote the mission of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore;
- Perform other duties as assigned; and,
- Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.
