Description

  Position Title: Learning Commons Assistant                                           Department: Academic Affairs

  Title of Immediate Supervisor/Leader to Whom This Position Reports: Learning Commons Coordinator

  *Expected Daily Work Hours: 40 hours a week as scheduled *Expected Weekly Work Schedule: evening and weekend hours ; primarily Sunday – Thursday, 4pm-12am

 

* College offices are normally open from 8:00 AM until 5:00PM, Monday through Friday. However, due to the nature of responsibility to the student body, individual offices or departments may have operating hours that extend beyond this period and may include evening or weekend hours. Non-exempt employees will normally work 8 hours per day.  Overtime (any hours more than 40 per week) for non-exempt employees is required to be approved, in advance by the department supervisor.  Exempt employees will typically work at least 40 hours per week and such additional time as may be reasonably required to fulfill the obligations of their position description.  Such additional work may include evenings and weekends and should be described in this document.

 

 Summary of this position:

The Learning Commons Assistant works at a public information desk, answering basic questions about services offered in the Learning Commons and connecting students to appropriate support resources. The Learning Commons Assistant works independently during weekends and evening hours to open and close the Learning Commons and provide facilities oversight and security/emergency response services.

 Minimum Qualifications Required: 

Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • Associate’s degree required. Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality, Management, or other related field, preferred[SG3] .

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • 1 to 3 years work experience at a customer service or information desk or in a similar customer service environment.

Special skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to use basic software and technology, such as Microsoft                                                                                

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • None.                                            

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to navigate campus/public buildings and grounds.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Environmental conditions:

  • Work is at a public service / information desk with limited expectations of uninterrupted or private work environment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Ability to operate the following vehicles or equipment:

  • Ability to use standard office equipment.

 

 Primary duties and responsibilities 

  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Answers basic questions about services offered in the Learning Commons at a public information desk.
  • Coordinates building access and security (fire alarms, exit alarms, handicapped access, emergency management) with Learning Commons Coordinator; relies on college security office for support.
  • Monitors condition of physical space and places work orders for repairs.
  • Collaborates with IT and Learning Commons Coordinator to support public computing services for students.
  • Informs IT and/or Learning Commons Coordinators of problems with public computers, printers, and media equipment in the library.
  • Manages space reservations for Learning Commons.

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty, and students.
