Basic Function:

The Coordinator of English Learner Education Programs and Services is a full-time position within the Office of Global Education, responsible for overseeing the strategic management, development, and continuous improvement of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program. This role involves designing and updating the ESL curriculum, teaching ESL courses, supervising and training instructors, and managing the daily operations of the program. Additionally, the Coordinator ensures the ESL program aligns with institutional goals and effectively meets the academic, linguistic, and cultural needs of international students, while promoting their overall success and integration into the university community. Responsibilities also include mentoring students, facilitating field trips, and collecting and analyzing data for program enhancement and reporting purposes.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a direct report to the Associate Provost (AP) for Global Education, assisting with related tasks and supporting all responsibilities within this area.
  • Develops, implements, and updates the ESL curriculum to meet the evolving academic and language proficiency needs of students, in alignment with recognized language standards.
  • Creates, revises, and enhances instructional materials, resources, and assessment tools to support effective teaching and learning.
  • Leads and manages the ESL program to ensure effective delivery, continuous improvement, and alignment with the institution’s goals and student needs.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises ESL instructors to ensure high-quality instruction. Provides ongoing professional development opportunities and conducts regular performance evaluations to foster a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Teaches ESL courses to international students, focusing on language proficiency, academic skills, and cultural understanding. Develops and delivers engaging lessons that promote language acquisition across reading, writing, listening, speaking, and academic communication.
  • Provides individualized support to students, offering additional help outside of class and fostering a positive, inclusive classroom environment. Offers mentoring services to guide students on academic and personal matters, assist with cultural adjustment, and support long-term success.
  • Cultivates a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that addresses student concerns related to language barriers, cultural differences, and academic challenges.
  • Implements and refines student assessment and placement procedures to ensure appropriate class levels and track student progress.
  • Collects and analyzes data on student outcomes, program effectiveness, and areas for improvement. Prepares reports for internal stakeholders and accreditation purposes.
  • Drives the university van to transport international students for field trips, ensuring a hands-on learning experience that complements classroom instruction. Plans and coordinates trips to cultural, historical, and educational sites, prioritizing student safety and engagement.
  • Assists students in applying language skills in real-world settings during field experiences, enhancing their learning and cultural understanding.
  • Provides exceptional service to students, clients, partners, and colleagues, fostering retention and supporting the growth of the department.
  • Regularly updates and organizes forms, documents, and files as needed. Assists in problem-solving across the organization to ensure smooth operations.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in higher education, student affairs, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating core competencies in program management and language education.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in ESL program management, including curriculum design, teaching, and/or instructor supervision, with a proven track record of improving program delivery and student outcomes.
  • Experience teaching ESL to international students and providing mentoring support to help students succeed academically and personally.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations, foster positive relationships, and address student needs.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills to manage student records, documentation, and multiple program activities efficiently.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and the ability to foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for international students, supporting their language acquisition and cultural adjustment.
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and the ability to drive the university van for student curricular and extracurricular activities.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, and weekends, to accommodate student needs, field trips, and program activities.
  • Must be detail-oriented with strong customer/client service skills, able to communicate clearly and effectively, able to work independently with minimal supervision; and, able to work on various large projects simultaneously. Strong administrative skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, intercultural communication, foreign languages, education, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience in ESL program management, including curriculum design, teaching, and/or instructor supervision, with a demonstrated ability to lead and improve ESL programs.
  • Proficiency in one or more foreign languages is a plus, enhancing the ability to support international students and understand language acquisition challenges.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate, guide, and supervise instructors and staff while managing the daily operations of the ESL program.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs. as needed for program materials, classroom resources, and event preparations.
  • Ability to occasionally sit for extended periods and drive a university van to transport students for field trips and other curricular or extracurricular activities.
