On-Call Field Biologist - California

General position summary:

Mason, Bruce, & Girard, Inc. (MB&G), a natural resource consulting firm headquartered in Portland, OR., seeks ambitious and enthusiastic on-call field biologists to support a variety of projects as needed during the 2025 field season. As a team member of our Environmental Services Group, you will support multiple projects, support or lead technical fieldwork, and draft reports. MB&G’s Environmental Services Group seeks field biologists of varying backgrounds such as wetland science, rare plant and noxious weed surveys, fisheries surveys, and wildlife surveys including Northern spotted owl, goshawk, marbled murrelet, and California special status species. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis as project needs dictate.

In this role, your major duties will include:

• Conduct various types of field surveys adhering to specific protocols.
• Provide background research and draft portions of technical memos.

• Act in a supporting role to project managers and prepare project deliverables within allotted level of effort and schedule.
• Understand and perform work using the correct level of effort appropriate for the scope, budget, and overall expectations.
• Responsible for accurate recording of notes and documentation for client projects.
• Support the preparation of permit applications.
• Perform work with a high level of integrity.

Education and/or Experience:

• BA or BS in Biology, Environmental Science, or closely related natural resource field required.
• Understanding of and experience with field survey procedures and protocols related to fish, wildlife, and/or plant species.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Basic technical report writing and editing skills.
• Attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
• Responsive and client service oriented.
• Intermediate level skill in MS Office.
• General understanding of environmental regulations (e.g. NEPA, ESA, CWA).
• Ability to use field gear (GPS units, electrofishing gear, aerial photos, munsell chart, etc.).
• General understanding of field procedures and safety protocols.
• 2 years of field experience in the Pacific Northwest.

Preferred Skills:

• Ability to identify flora and fauna of the Pacific Northwest.
• 3 years of field experience in the Pacific Northwest.
• Experience working with environmental laws, regulations, policy and procedures desired.
• Experience working for an environmental consulting firm or A&E firm a significant plus.
• Experience as a field crew leader.

Job Conditions

Work is performed both within the field and working from home. In certain instances, candidates may need to report to work in an office. Candidates must be located in either Washington, Oregon, or California. Field work is to be performed in all weather conditions, steep rough terrain, rural areas, and a variety of settings including open fields, streams, and forested areas. If Mother Nature can create it, we will survey it. Extensive computer use, physical ability to operate a telephone, and sit for extended periods of time; may lift/carry up to 50 pounds.
