Communications Technician Level I: $57.42 per hr.
Communications Technician Level II: $54.52 per hr.
Mason PUD 3 is seeking an individual to fill the position of communications technician. Successful candidates must be willing to live within 30 minutes travel time under normal conditions of their regularly assigned headquarters or live within the district’s service territory.
Qualifications
- Have a working knowledge of all telecommunications safety standards, rules and regulations of the State of Washington and have a valid first aid/CPR certification.
- The ability to use the tools and equipment of the trade and be knowledgeable of the materials used in installation, maintenance and repair of fiber and wireless communications network equipment.
- Must be proficient in the operation of a personal computer in order to perform basic LAN based IP configurations on network devices, data entry of test data and documentation of physical plant activity in the field.
- Proven experience in successfully installing and testing of outside plant fiber optic facilities.
- Proven experience in successfully terminating single-mode fiber strands using mechanical connectors.
- Proven experience in successfully splicing fiber strands using fusion and mechanical procedures.
- Have the ability to learn via OJT, online, as well as in a classroom.
- Ability to accurately recognize and distinguish between colors.
- A record of punctuality and regular attendance.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of computer integration hardware and software.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
- Have the ability to interact in a courteous and respectful manner within the organization and with the general public and use excellent human relations skills as a representative of the PUD.
- Accessibility to respond to after-hours emergencies for service restoration is required. An operating telephone at place of residence is necessary.
- Possess a valid Washington State class “A” commercial driver’s license in accordance with RCW Title 46 and have a good driving record.
Education and Experience
- Have a High School education or equivalent.
- Two years of technical training or certification in telecommunications system; or any combination of education and experience that meets the requirements of a Level II or I position.
- Level II – Two (2) years of experience as Communications Technician II and/or proficient knowledge of Fiber and wireless communications systems demonstrated by Vocational training/ Apprenticeship training and/or experience resulting in the proven ability to perform communications installations, maintenance, and repair as listed under this positions Qualifications.
- Level I – Two (2) years of experience as a Level II technician with satisfactory performance evaluations, and proficient abilities in provisioning IP/ Network Configuration (LAN) on Wireless and Fiber communications equipment deployed in the field.
OR, Exceeds the qualifications of a Level II. Operations supervisors will determine whether the applicant possesses the qualifications of Level I.
Job duties
- Install, maintain and repair the fiber optic network and cable plant, to include but not be limited to:
- Installing and splicing single fiber optic cable;
- Mounting equipment on poles and structures;
- Maintenance of all outside plant facilities and equipment to ensure reliability.
- Install and maintain wireless broadband and microwave equipment on tower facilities.
- Ability to analyze OTDR traces and troubleshoot fiber optic laser signals.
- Monitor and evaluate system performance using test equipment, schematics and meter readings.
- Testing of fiber strands with optical power meter and optical time domain reflectometer.
- Installing, terminating and testing Ethernet cables.
- Install, remove, test, adjust, calibrate and perform preventative, corrective and emergency maintenance on telecommunications radio equipment with frequencies through 900MHz including trunked radio systems as well as higher frequencies utilized for Microwave Radio Systems. These consist of fixed, mobile and portable radios used for voice, data, LAN, SCADA, and telemetry. Systems include but not be limited to:
- Equipment on poles and structures up to, and in excess of 150 feet.
- Maintenance of all wireless outside plant facilities, hardware, and network equipment.
- Install and maintain microwave equipment; including transmitters, receivers, antennas, multiplex equipment, signaling converters, and associated wiring.
- Monitor and evaluate system performance using test equipment, schematics and meter readings.
- Installation and maintenance of two-way voice/data communications radios.
- Assist telecommunications engineering staff in installing, testing and implementing new telecommunications systems for the PUD.
- Perform technical work and provide assistance with troubleshooting the communications and electronics systems.
- Work with Operations and Telecommunications staff (including linemen, other technician/electricians, maintenance personnel, and consultants) and other District personnel to accomplish major repairs and installations. The incumbent will also work independently on routine maintenance assignments.
- Program IP / Network Configuration (LAN) on Wireless and Fiber communications equipment deployed in the field.
- Prepare as-built and field documentation of communications systems.
- Communicate with end-users (customers) to determine telecommunications needs.
- Identify and document problems in the telecommunications system and pass appropriate information to supervisor.
- Must be able to respond to overtime, as needed.
- Other duties as assigned (not to conflict with the Collective Bargaining Agreement or State safety regulations).
