Job Summary
The Nursing Director of Trauma and Emergency Surgery Services, in collaboration with the Medical Director, is accountable for establishing and maintaining excellence of care to the patients within the Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery, and Surgery Critical Care at MGH. This is achieved through the delivery of consistent, high-quality patient care, promoting the development of clinical nursing staff, providing operating efficiencies, and ensuring compliance with hospital and regulatory policies and standards of practice.

Essential Functions
- Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating the trauma program and adherence to the Level 1 Trauma standards.
- Actively engage in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for the department.
- Provide vision, direction, and leadership to the affiliated Acute Care Surgical (ACS) programs through the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, procedures, and standards of care necessary for the coordination and delivery of excellent patient-focused care.
- Evaluate and supervise staff based on mutually agreed upon goals in job descriptions.
- Ensure that the Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) critically reviews reports and takes appropriate actions to achieve successful patient outcomes and improve the quality of care.
- Implement strategies to enhance retention and reduce turnover.
- Promote a safe and positive working environment.
- Promote an environment that is sensitive to the culturally diverse needs of patients and employees.
- Prepare departmental budget and operate department within budgetary guidelines.
- Assign patients for day-to-day management to nursing coordinators and / or Nursing Supervisors / Managers.
Qualifications
Education
Master’s degree required; either Bachelor's or Master’s degree must be in nursing.
Licenses and Credentials
Registered Nurse [RN - MA License] required.
Experience
Progressive nursing leadership / management within an Academic Medical Center and Trauma Center required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Previous experience in Trauma required. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Must have excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Strong commitment to clinical excellence. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations. Knowledge of Regulatory Agency Regulations.
