Job Summary
The Opportunity: Medical Assistant – IV Therapy Department
Qualifications
Under the direction of the Nursing Director, the Medical Assistant works in the inpatient setting providing direct and indirect service for inpatients and providers. The medical assistant works with the interdisciplinary health team in providing a wide variety of clinical, administrative, and technical support functions in the delivery of healthcare in the inpatient units and within the vascular access nursing team. The Medical Assistant for the Vascular Access Nursing Team will also perform the principal administrative responsibilities.
Schedule
Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Completion of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent and current certification as a Medical Assistant.

Qualifications

The medical assistant works with the interdisciplinary health team in providing a wide variety of clinical, administrative, and technical support functions in the delivery of healthcare in the inpatient units and within the vascular access nursing team. The Medical Assistant for the Vascular Access Nursing Team will also perform the principal administrative responsibilities.

- Assists in providing a safe and comfortable patient/family experience.
- Assists with meeting patient/family comfort needs
- Maintains patient and family confidentiality
- Communicates in a respectful manner
- Assists with patient data and specimen collection.
- Assists with equipment preparation, cleaning and monitoring. Reviews expiration dates and notifies Biomedical Engineering of any outdated or defective equipment.
- Documents thoroughly and accurately according to hospital policy.
- Accepts delegated responsibilities that are within their defined role.
- Provides age-appropriate care as described in the age specific policies.
- Engages in collaborative communication with other members of the health care team (staff nurse assigned to patient, radiology staff, unit assistant and desk assistants)
- Collaborates with the Nursing Director, identifies and meets learning needs. Completes annual required training and updates knowledge through periodic in-services.
- Assists IV nurse with the insertion of PICCs (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters) which includes initiating and maintaining the sterile field throughout the insertion process, equipment set up and patient positioning. Participates in Universal Time Out protocol with IV nurse for patient safety.
- Performs routine PICC site checks and dressing changes using strict aseptic technique according to hospital policy.
- Performs phlebotomy support for the inpatients as requested.
- Assists and manages stocking of supplies and equipment as it relates to the practice.
- Maintains confidentiality and privacy which is consistent with HIPAA guidelines.
- Assists with clinical Audits (ex. PICC dressings, Kinked PICCs).
- Draft & distribute minutes for Bimonthly staff meetings.
- Monitor/ track Voalte Phones & request repairs.
- Update and maintain VAT Dept. SharePoint site (Private / Dept. only).
- Maintain supply of Dept.-Specific forms (e.g., Consent forms, Daily Assignment sheets, HOB wall sheets, etc.).
- Manage “VAT Dept. Calendar”
- Assist with drafting daily assignments, for IV techs.
- Submit repair requests for equipment malfunctions (Biomed and/or Vendor Rep.)
- Basic understanding epic reports.
- Ordering supplies using the Workday system
- Performs the daily management of encounter form processing and reconcilement.
- Knowledge of scanning procedures and label printing.
- Remains current on any changing issues within the unit which affects vascular access flow.
