Job Summary

The Butovsky lab at the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases is seeking to hire a highly qualified and motivated Research Lab Manager to work with 4-6 Postdoc Research fellows and 2-3 research techs to help understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and develop novel therapies for treating it. This full-time position provides direct administrative-level support to Dr. Butovsky. The successful candidate will have a mature, strongly positive, and helpful nature, demonstrate commitment to administrative work, and have an interest in continuous learning about biomedical research and the overall nature and function of the PIs’ research program. The workload is fast-paced, heavy, and complex, demanding maturity, ownership, independence, responsibility, performance, proactivity, and integrity. Excellent communication, organization, prioritization, project management, and teamwork skills are a must.


Qualifications

Education:
BS Required, MS preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 5 years of progressively more responsible research work experience. Prior supervisory experience is required.

  • Good organizational skills, detail-oriented to ensure smooth functioning of the lab.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Laboratory management/basic experimental research

  • Supervises preparing and stock of necessary lab reagents, solutions, and supplies.
  • Supervises laboratory operation, including overseeing equipment purchase or repairs, negotiating pricing and generating purchase requisitions, monitoring supply inventory, sourcing supplies, managing staff activities and needs, and being a point of contact with vendors.
  • Manages all lab personnel, including onboarding, offboarding, and training staff in specialized lab techniques.
  • Responsible for animal husbandry, specifically breeding, supervising weaning, and genotyping.
  • Responsible for maintaining long-term tissue cultures of human and mouse cell lines and monitoring cells for viability and contamination.
  • Conducts immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and molecular biology techniques such as sequencing and PCR. Handles animals, including performing stereotactic surgeries and intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections. Records data and analyzes results using basic statistics.
  • Carries out independent research projects, including tissue culture, PCR analysis, in vitro experiments, and in vivo disease models (AD, MS, ALS).

Laboratory administration

  • Acts as primary contact and representative of the Butovsky Laboratory for internal and external departments, agencies, and sponsors.
  • Responsible for ordering laboratory and general office supplies using the eBuy system. Tracks all invoice activity, including generating purchase orders and following up on unpaid invoices.
  • Responsible for renewal of lab protocols related to animal protocols, radiation safety, and bio-safety activities.
  • Direct support to the Principal Investigator and laboratory staff in the form of correspondence, copying, filing, faxing and word processing, Fedex, and other clerical duties.
  • Responsible for coordinating calendars, travel, schedules, conferences, and meetings, including tracking and managing related expenses.
  • Responsible for preparing new Data Use Agreements and ensuring that renewals are processed and submitted in a timely manner. Maintains “Insight” database of Data Use Agreements.
  • Responsible for preparing and processing Material Transfer Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements, collaborations, etc., in cooperation with BWH Research Management staff, the PI, and external organizations.
  • Responsible for exporting mice and importing mice from outside collaborators.
  • Responsible for coordinating arrangements for visiting speakers and prospective candidates to the Center, including travel, hotel, and meal accommodations, distribution of announcements, and expense reimbursement. Coordinates on-site arrangements for conferences/meetings or special events sponsored by the PIs. Coordinates bi-weekly lab meetings, including maintaining and distributing calendars, and catering.

Regulatory | Safety | Compliance | Pre-award Grants

  • Responsible for the coordination of all regulatory and compliance activities for the lab including maintaining Standard Operating Procedures for all functions of the laboratory.
  • Functions as the Safety Representative for the laboratory and participates in the Institution's Safety Managers' meetings.
  • Responsible for preparation of administrative sections of grants and continuing applications, research descriptions, updating biosketches, and other support pages.
  • Creates timelines and works closely with other staff to ensure the completion of key tasks by appropriate target dates.
  • Responsible for coordinating the submission of grant applications or progress reports for the internal approval process and for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of final submission to the sponsor.
  • Maintains grant database information in “Insight” and appropriate hard and soft files.
  • Perform literature searches. Uploads manuscripts to NIH database. Organizes maintains and develops office files, directories, and listings, (including grants, manuscripts, reprints, CVs, etc) as necessary for efficient office operation.
