The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air, land, and water. Our work impacts every aspect of people's lives and is critical to the health and wellbeing of our residents and visitors. MassDEP is seeking an environmental professional to provide forecasting, modeling, and analysis of air quality data. You will be responsible for public MassDEP air quality forecasts and posts on MassAir and EPA AirNow Tech. During open burning season, your analysis will inform Fire Chiefs throughout the state whether air quality conditions are acceptable for open burning. The forecaster communicates forecast and air quality information to senior management and the public affairs office regarding pollution events and supports press communications on air quality and develops air quality content for MassDEP’s website.
You will have the opportunity to work closely with program managers and stakeholders to identify key concerns, analyze community monitoring data, and develop solutions that effectively address the needs of our communities. You will also have the chance to build and maintain relationships with forecasters in other states and U.S. EPA as well as community partners and stakeholders and represent MassDEP on regional and national calls and at community meetings and events. Our team is looking for someone who can think outside the box, and who is not afraid to dive headfirst into new and exciting challenges.
Specific duties for this position include, but are not limited to, the following :
- Provide (or oversee) MassDEP air quality forecasts and post on MassAir and EPA AirNow Tech. During open burning season, inform Fire Chiefs throughout the state whether air quality conditions are acceptable for open burning.
- Monitor and maintain the MassAIR web application and successor systems. Ensure constancy with EPA methods and maintain knowledge of similar systems in other states.
- Analyze air quality data using statistical and spatial / GIS tools. Use database applications to manipulate large datasets. Retrieve or calculate design values for criteria pollutants. Conduct model vs monitor studies. Calculate potential health risks. Assess and report on trends and patterns both temporal and geospatial.
- Conduct / review / evaluate air quality modeling including but not limited to air dispersion modeling consistent with state-of-the-art modeling techniques and state and federal protocols, guidance and requirements. Provide technical assistance and guidance to facilities who will be submitting modeling results to MassDEP as well as to other state or federal agencies and the public.
- Lead modeling or analytical projects for policy development, research, or evaluation. Review EPA guidance and other technical and planning documents to ensure that forecasts, plans, analyses, and modeling comply with Clean Air Act requirements and EPA guidelines. Develop modeling or analytical protocols and guidance for use by MassDEP Boston and regional office staff, regulated sources and their consultants.
- Participate in / lead regular forecasting calls and trainings sponsored by EPA or regional organizations. Maintain in-depth current understanding of techniques, platforms, guidelines, and best practices for forecasting and modeling in part by participating in training workshops, modeling conferences, and conference calls with forecasting and modeling staff from other states.
Preferred Experience or Qualifications :

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS :
Applicants must have at least (A) five years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in the field of environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, environmental health, meteorology, natural science, toxicology or public health, of which (B) at least three years must have been in a professional capacity, and of which (C) at least one year must have been in a supervisory, managerial or administrative capacity, or (D) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the following substitutions.
Substitutions :
NOTE : Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required (B) experience. No substitutions will be permitted for the required (C) experience.
