The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, a part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic Quality and Patient Safety Lead Nurse. Under the direction of the Chief Quality Officer, this role is dedicated to improving the quality and safety of patient care. The Lead Nurse will develop, implement, and oversee risk management activities, including incident investigation and follow-up, quality data collection and reporting, and performance improvement initiatives. The successful candidate will establish and maintain collaborative relationships with all services, departments, and leaders to design and promote a focused, integrated, and collaborative quality program that ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
All personnel are expected to comply with hospital policies and applicable state and federal laws, including HIPAA, to ensure confidentiality.
Hours : 8-4 : 30pm, Monday-Friday with weekends off
Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive) :
- Oversees the development and implementation of a comprehensive patient safety program inclusive of the analysis and trending of data.
- Supervises risk investigations of incidents reported through the hospital’s incident reporting system or other means of reporting to quality, such as Joint Commission complaints.
- Analyzes and verifies accuracy of information of incident and occurrence reports. Ensures any additional information relevant to the incident or occurrence report through auditing and monitoring. Supervises the process for incident follow-up documentation.
- Facilitates the development of corrective action plans which may include a performance or process improvement plan.
- Ensures mandatory reporting to regulatory agencies (e.g., Department of Public Health Healthcare Quality, Board of Registration in Medicine, and The Joint Commission) is in accordance with the required specifications for the regulatory agency.
- Oversees the process for monitoring corrective action plans, patient complaints and grievances to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Chairs and / or sits as a member on applicable Committees, Councils and Taskforces. Provides data and other quality reporting as required.
- Supports and provides training and education for new hire orientation and as needed on quality, risk management, and performance improvement to staff.
- Develops quality and patient safety scorecard, in conjunction with clinical and operational leaders, to identify trends and track adherence to patient safety goals.
- Collaborates with departmental leaders and guides the development of department specific quality assessment data indicators.
- Monitors quality assessment and performance improvement activities of departments and committees for compliance with the hospital’s Quality Improvement program and reports any risks, compliance concerns or newly discovered opportunities for improvement to the Chief Quality Officer (CQO) as appropriate.
- Provides collaboration in the formation of relevant policies and procedures with hospital leadership.
- Provides ongoing supervision to assigned staff, providing one to one direction as needed.
- Develops, reviews, revises, and implements written procedures for the Quality Management department.
- Leads or participates in hospital performance improvement including root cause analysis, causal analysis, proactive risk assessments including Failure Mode Effects analysis, regulatory readiness activities, and performance improvement methodologies including LEAN / Six Sigma.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.
Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.
The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS :
Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions :
I. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES : Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing .
Special Requirements : Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
