The Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC) , operated by the Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a Power Plant Supervisor - 2nd Class to join its facilities team. This position is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the hospital's high-pressure steam power plant. The role includes supervising the operation, maintenance, and repair of boilers, auxiliary equipment, and HVAC systems, while responding to emergencies, equipment breakdowns, and fuel management. The incumbent will also assist with capital planning, energy conservation projects, and compliance with state regulations.
Schedule
This is a 40-hour per week position, working Monday - Friday, 6 : 00 AM - 2 : 30 PM .
Duties and Responsibilities (This is a general summary and not all-inclusive.)
- Supervise the operation of a high-pressure steam power plant, ensuring continuous and safe operation.
- Monitor and inspect power plant systems including boilers, steam traps, generators, HVAC systems, electrical and pneumatic controls.
- Evaluate and oversee maintenance and repair needs for power plant equipment, including boilers, motors, pumps, compressors, and electrical components.
- Develop and implement work schedules to ensure 24-hour coverage of plant operations.
- Monitor fuel levels and ensure proper handling and storage in compliance with safety regulations.
- Respond 24 / 7 to emergencies and breakdowns, assessing and troubleshooting issues to maintain operational integrity.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal environmental regulations, including directives from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Public Safety (DPS).
- Assign and oversee preventative maintenance tasks to optimize system efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Start emergency generators during power failures, including manual operations if automatic systems fail.
- Assist with energy conservation projects, capital planning, and facility improvement initiatives as directed by the Director of Facilities.
- Document fuel consumption, system performance, and maintenance activities in logs and reports.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the hospital's operational goals.

Special Requirements : Possession of a Second Class or higher Stationary Engineer's License based on the standards established by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety and pursuant to Chapter 146 of the Massachusetts General Laws.
Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate's years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division's Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
