What are the responsibilities and job description for the Child Life Specialist position at Massachusetts General Hospital?
Child Life Specialist Mass General Hospital for Children provides a full spectrum of care - from primary care to a broad range of specialty and subspecialty pediatric services - for newborns, children and adolescents from New England and around the world. We currently have an opening on our inpatient unit for an experienced certified Child Life Specialist to join the integrative team.
The Child Life Specialist designs, implements and evaluates programs that assess and treat the psychosocial, developmental and educational needs of children and their families in the healthcare setting.
Organizes and directs a therapeutic program that meets the developmental, emotional, and psychosocial needs of children and their families
Collaborates with members of the multidisciplinary team
Utilizes therapeutic techniques to decrease anxiety and foster positive coping skills
Promotes family-centered care and a child friendly environment to support the unique needs of children and families
Prepares children and families for medical encounters
Encourages developmental and therapeutic play opportunities to promote socialization, normalization and the outlets for self-expression
Liaison with community partnerships as well as facilitates special programming events
Budgeting and maintenance of child life supplies and donations
Bachelor's degree required; Masters preferred
2 years' experience in hospital/clinical setting preferred
Certifications and Training:
Completion of child life internship (600 hours) under the direct supervision of a certified child life specialist required
Certification through the ACLP as a child life specialist is required within 6 months of hire
