Funded by MGB's United Against Racism Equity Improvement Program initiative, the resource specialist will work with the UAR funded Psychiatry Substance Use Disorders project team to support Black patients' access to and retention in substance use treatment in MGB's outpatient addiction clinics. The resource specialist will help facilitate the referrals of Black patients from various clinics including primary care and Bridge clinics to the West End Clinic (Massachusetts General Hospital) and the Outpatient Addiction Recovery Program (Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital under Brigham Psychiatric Services). The resource specialist will also provide appointment and resource support to Black patients during their course of treatment in the clinics

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working with UAR-funded Psychiatry Substance Use Disorders (UAR Psych SUDS) Equity project team:

  • Work and collaborate with project team whose goal is to support Black patients' access to and treatment retention in substance use care.
  • Attend weekly UAR Psych SUDS Equity project meetings.
  • Assist with administrative duties and data entry.

Supporting Black patient referrals to Outpatient Addiction Recovery Program (ARP) and West End Clinic (WEC):

  • Work with other departments and clinics in the MGB system including Primary Care and Bridge Clinics to assist with patients' referrals and transition to addiction treatment at WEC and ARP.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings at WEC and ARP.
  • Help develop informational materials/pamphlets that can be shared with referring clinics.
  • Participate with the UAR Psych SUDS project team in presenting to clinics and groups within the MGB about the current project.
  • Communicate with social workers, recovery coaches, physicians and nurse practitioners in referring clinics providing them with referral information to WEC and ARP and evaluate appropriateness of referrals to WEC and ARP.
  • Orient and welcome new patients following referrals to WEC/ARP to ensure a successful transition to the clinics.

Supporting Black patient care for patients at ARP and WEC:

  • Administer and collect consent forms allowing patients to communicate with resource specialist through text message as needed.
  • Complete reminder calls and texts to patients requesting appointment reminders.
  • Complete follow-up calls and texts to patients who have missed their appointments.
  • Schedule/reschedule appointments as needed.
  • Communicate with administrative and clinic staff at WEC and ARP as needed.
  • Document communication related to patient coordination of care in MGB EPIC Electronic Medical Record.
  • Provide and track transportation/food vouchers support as needed.
  • Direct patients to additional resource supports as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

The position requires a high degree of flexibility, independence, and willingness to participate in multiple activities that provide support to patients. Strong communication skills and the ability to converse comfortably with patients, as well as with clinical and administrative staff are needed.

  • Familiarity with addiction treatment, systems of care, and community resource.
  • Interest in health equity and anti-racism initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, customer service and advocacy skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent judgment and ability to work independently in a unique position.
  • Flexibility and resourcefulness as well as strong assessment and problem-solving skills
  • Strong computer skills and competency using Excel.

EDUCATION: Specify minimum education and clearly indicate if preferred or required

  • High school diploma or GED required, associate or bachelor's degree preferred

EXPERIENCE: Specify minimum creditable years of experience and clearly indicate if preferred or required

  • At least 2-3 years of work experience in the mental health care/health care/ public health field, especially with substance use disorders, preferred.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable): Indicate financial "scope" information, i.e.: size of budget, volume, revenue, etc.; Indicate total physician/non-physician FTE scope

  • 1 year through September 2025 Grant funded position with option of renewal

WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.

  • Hybrid position: Office setting & mobile
  • Travel required between MGB sites pending needs of the project.
