Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Health Services provides comprehensive healthcare to college students, including urgent, primary, preventative, travel, occupational, and sexual health care services. This role requires experience in women's healthcare, including contraceptive counseling, gynecological exams, and prescription management.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver primary, urgent, and preventive healthcare to students. Provide initial care in emergency situations.
- Perform minor medical procedures within scope of practice and expertise.
- Provides contraception counseling, prescription writing, women's health support, and sexual health care
- Provide medical care and support for cadets and crew aboard the NSMV PATRIOT STATE during the annual sea term semester. Assists in the preparation of the medical facilities aboard the training ship
- Assist with extended clinical operations, including vaccination clinics, Campus EMS, U.S. Coast Guard physical exams, and travel and commercial shipping related medical needs.
- Audit cadets' medical fitness in coordination with the Mariner Credentialing Office, Career Services, Athletics, Navy and other ROTC programs.
- Offer individual health counseling, particularly regarding medical conditions relevant to U.S. Coast Guard medical standards for Merchant Mariner licensing.
- Assists in medical clearance of incoming freshmen class with a particular focus of clinical conditions which may interfere with Merchant Mariner licensing.
- Interface with student-facing departments, such as Admissions, Registrar, Commercial Shipping, Mariner Licensing, Athletics, and Command Staff, to promote student health and success both on campus on the training ship and in preparation for domestic and overseas experiential learning programs
- Collaborate with the Director of Counseling to coordinate behavioral health care for students.
- Work with the Commandant of Cadets to promote student health and safety during Orientation and throughout the academic year.
- Support/help develop and participate in educational programs covering general health, preventive care, sexual health, travel health, interpersonal relationships, and substance use.
- Support administrative functions of Health Services as assigned by the Health Services Director.
- Stands in for the Director of Health Services when needed
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Holds Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with experience in college health, primary care, urgent care or emergency medicine.
- Holds a Massachusetts medication control license
- Experience/comfort in women's healthcare, including gynecological exams, contraception counseling, and sexual health care services.
- TWIC/MMC: Once hired, the Academy will assist the successful candidate to obtain the needed shipboard credentials of a Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) and an entry-level Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
Preferred Qualifications:
- College health or adolescent medicine experience
- Strong collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams in a higher education setting.
- Prior knowledge of Merchant Marine medical requirements is valuable, but not required.
