General Responsibilities
General Statement of Duties:
The Wellness Coach at Massachusetts Maritime Academy plays a key role in fostering the holistic well-being of approximately 1,400 cadets. This position emphasizes a balanced approach to health and wellness by integrating the Wellness Wheel framework, which includes physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, and occupational wellness. The coach works to empower cadets to set and achieve meaningful goals, identify areas for improvement across all dimensions of wellness, and make sustainable lifestyle changes. Collaboration with campus health services and leadership teams ensures a comprehensive approach to supporting cadets’ success within the unique regimental structure of the Academy. This position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, in-depth knowledge of wellness principles, and a certified wellness coaching credential.
Key Responsibilities of the role include:
1. Individual and Group Coaching Sessions:
- Conduct one-on-one consultations with cadets to assess their overall wellness using the Wellness Wheel as a guide.
- Identify strengths and areas for growth in each dimension of wellness, including physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, environmental, and occupational.
- Develop personalized, multidimensional wellness plans tailored to cadets’ unique needs and goals.
- Use evidence-based coaching methods to help cadets adopt sustainable changes that support balance and growth across all dimensions of wellness.
- Empower cadets to navigate regimental and academic demands while maintaining their health and well-being.
2. Goal Setting and Accountability:
- Assist cadets in establishing SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals aligned with the Wellness Wheel dimensions.
- Provide ongoing support and accountability through regular check-ins and progress reviews.
3. Education and Awareness: Design and deliver interactive workshops and presentations on topics such as:
- Physical Wellness: Nutrition, exercise, sleep hygiene, and injury prevention.
- Emotional Wellness: Stress management, resilience building, and mental health resources.
- Social Wellness: Building healthy relationships and improving communication skills.
- Intellectual Wellness: Fostering curiosity and critical thinking through lifelong learning.
- Spiritual Wellness: Identifying personal values, purpose, and mindfulness practices.
- Environmental Wellness: Creating a healthy living and working environment.
- Occupational Wellness: Managing academic and leadership responsibilities effectively.
4. Referral and Collaboration:
- Collaborate with campus professionals, including counselors, medical staff, dietitians, and leadership to address complex or specialized wellness needs.
- Facilitate connections to campus and external resources that support various aspects of the Wellness Wheel.
5. Data Collection and Analysis:
- Track cadet engagement and outcomes to assess trends in wellness needs.
- Use data to inform program design and measure the effectiveness of coaching and initiatives.
6. Program Development and Implementation:
- Develop and implement wellness initiatives that address the interconnected dimensions of the Wellness Wheel.
- Tailor programs to the regimented lifestyle of cadets, fostering resilience, balance, and personal growth.
- This role is central to creating a supportive and thriving environment at Massachusetts Maritime Academy, ensuring cadets are equipped to excel academically, lead effectively, and maintain holistic wellness throughout their journey.
Qualifications and Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in health, wellness, nutrition, exercise science, psychology, or a related field.
- Certified Wellness Coach credential from a recognized organization
- Experience working with diverse populations, including college students
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills
- Ability to build rapport and create a trusting relationship with students
- Strong understanding of health and wellness principles, including behavioral change theory
- Proficient in utilizing technology for data tracking and client management
