General Responsibilities
General responsibilities:
- The Third Assistant Engineer is responsible for the safe operation and repair of training ship electrical distribution, electrical generating systems, refrigeration, water making, and related equipment.
- Duties include watch standing, routine maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery, maintaining an inventory of spare parts and supplies necessary for maintenance and repairs, ensuring cleanliness of the ship’s engineering spaces, and assisting with outside contractors for the installation and repair of shipboard systems.
- The Third Assistant Engineer may be required to stand watch in the engineering spaces; assuming responsibility for the operation of the engineering plant and maintaining operational logs and records.
- The Third Assistant Engineer will assist the Chief and First Engineer in coordinating the work of Cadets and subordinate maintenance staff.
- Additionally, the Third Assistant Engineer will ensure that the vessel’s maintenance and repair records are properly and accurately maintained in the computerized maintenance management system for their areas of responsibility. This is to include timely requests for materials and parts required for the maintenance of equipment.
- A key role for all crew members is to support the training of cadets and the unique mission of the Academy; the Third Assistant Engineer may be asked to train cadets in some circumstances.
- All selected candidates must comply with Mass. Maritime Academy military customs, uniforms and ranks and participate in random drug screening.
- All selected candidates must participate in the annual Sea Term, Mini-Cruise, shipyard periods, and other vessel deployments or utilizations. In addition, the candidate must be available for on-call periods while the vessel is alongside on nights and weekends.
Qualifications and Requirements
Specific minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in recognized academic discipline.
- Hold USCG License as an unlimited Third Assistant Engineer, Motor, Unlimited Horsepower with appropriate STCW endorsements for international voyages.
- At least 1 years’ experience as Third Assistant Engineer or military equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of electrical generating systems, water makers, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.
- Exhibit computer, oral and written communication skills.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems.
- Understand the unique mission of the university as a maritime academy.
