General Responsibilities
General Description: The Seaman II position supports the operation and maintenance of marine vessels, equipment, and related facilities at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. This role involves hands-on vessel maintenance, seamanship instruction, and supervision of cadets and department operations. This position combines hands-on maintenance activities with leadership and instructional responsibilities, making it ideal for candidates with strong seamanship skills and experience in marine vessel maintenance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Marine Operations Support: Assist the Marine Director in overseeing Marine Department assets; supervise cadets during marine operations and activities.
- Seamanship Instruction: Provide practical instruction in line handling, splicing, anchor machinery, boat davits, and rescue equipment. Train cadets and staff in proper use of davits, winches, windlasses, and gangways.
- Vessel and Facility Maintenance: Responsible for conducting daily inspection of marine department vessels on the waterfront morning and evening; Conduct and supervise vessel maintenance, including steel preservation, painting, welding, and bilge cleaning; Perform upkeep of piers, floats, and Marine department buildings; Oversee inventory and proper use of paints, chemicals, and maintenance equipment.
- Marine Equipment Handling: Participate in mooring and releasing vessels, anchor handling, and securing gangways; engage in routine marine machinery maintenance and lubrication.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, including participation in the random drug testing program for safety-sensitive positions.
- Additional Duties: Must be a self-starter able to work independently of direct supervision; perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications and Requirements
Qualifications:
- Candidate must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a seaman in the Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, governmental organization or similar marine experience.
- Possess knowledge of seamanship terminology, equipment and devices for operating marine vessels, and types of materials and methods for repairing and cleaning marine vessels.
- Skilled in using seamanship hand tools and knot-tying.
- This position requires finalist to complete pre-employment physical exam, drug screen and background check, and additionally requires participation in the employer’s random drug testing program.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications: Hold current and valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC); STCW Basic Safety Training endorsement preferred; Massachusetts Hydraulic Operators license; Class 2 or CDL Driver’s License
Shift Schedule: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.* (*Initial assignment only – subject to change according to Administration)
