The Massachusetts Society of CPAs (MassCPAs) is the largest association for CPAs in Massachusetts. With over 11,500 members, including students, CPAs and accounting professionals in a variety of industries, we strive to be the local, professional home for our membership.
The Government Affairs Manager supports the Massachusetts Society of CPAs’ public policy initiatives by monitoring legislation, fostering relationships with policymakers and representing the Society at key events. This role involves preparing testimony, drafting position papers and providing timely updates to members on legislative and regulatory issues impacting the accounting profession.
Government Affairs & Advocacy:
- Support and contribute to the Society’s government affairs and public policy strategies in Massachusetts.
- Cultivate and expand relationships with public officials and influential policymakers at both state and federal levels including state agencies and boards including the Department of Revenue and the Board of Public Accountancy.
Legislative & Regulatory Monitoring:
- Monitor bills and regulations, analyze their impact on the accounting profession and communicate findings to stakeholders as appropriate.
- Prepare or coordinate testimony for legislative hearings on bills the Society sponsors, supports or opposes.
Research & Reporting:
- Develop position papers, summaries, and statistical analyses for presentation to the Board of Directors by the CEO or Vice President of Government Affairs.
- Provide timely and well-researched responses to member inquiries, including conducting additional research when necessary.
Representation & Engagement:
- Attend hearings, legislative sessions and other key events as needed.
- Represent the Society at fundraisers, legislative programs, and events hosted by MassCPA or partner organizations such as chambers of commerce, AIM and other trade/professional associations.
Member Communication & Grassroots Development:
- Work collaboratively with supervisors and peers to grow and strengthen the Society’s grassroots member network.
- Contribute updates for Society publications, including the membership magazine, weekly email newsletters and other relevant communications.
PAC Development:
- Assist in developing and managing programs to increase fundraising for the MassCPAs’ Political Action Committee (PAC).
- Coordinate PAC events and initiatives to enhance member engagement and support.
Workforce Development:
- Collaborate with state agencies and other organizations to develop and implement programs that support the association’s pipeline and student outreach initiatives. Identify state and federal programs that align with the Society’s mission and goals.
- Work closely with the Academic and Career Development department and other internal teams to identify and address key workforce issues and foster collaboration.
- Serve as the primary liaison between state agencies and participating firms, ensuring effective communication and seamless program execution.
Governance
- Support the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, and Board of Directors in all aspects of association governance, with a focus on maintaining and updating the organization’s bylaws as necessary.
- Serve as a key liaison for Board operations, ensuring the efficient flow of information and communication between the CEO and the Board of Directors.
- Participate in Board meetings, providing logistical support, preparing materials, and ensuring alignment with governance best practices.
Education/Certification/Experience Requirement
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 3-5 years of experience in government/legislative affairs
- Energetic, positive, professional, and self-motivated
- Excellent customer service and oral and written communication skills to interact effectively with both internal and external key stakeholders. Enjoys networking, building relationships and creating connections.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and needs of the organization
- Must have a team-based approach and ability to work collaboratively across departments to achieve goals
- Strong time management, prioritization and project management skills
- Experience and ease with public speaking to a variety of audiences
- Must have access to own transportation to travel within Massachusetts
- MassCPAs is a hybrid work environment. Employees are expected to work in the Boston office and/or to attend member events 1-2 days a week (can be more based on time of year).
