POSITION SUMMARY:
Assumes responsibility for conducting research, developing new products, improving existing products and supporting field evaluations on new products on a global basis. The R&D Principal Scientist recommends new raw materials, equipment and manufacturing procedures. This position provides technical and supervisory support within the laboratory and other MFS departments as required. The R&D Principal Scientist coordinates research and development activities with marketing, manufacturing, laboratory and health and safety departments.
The R&D Principal Scientist guides QC and production in dealing with unusual problems related to non-conforming production batches and borderline in-coming raw materials as well as day-to-day production problems providing technical assistance in utilizing and/or disposing of old stocks of raw materials and finished goods.
Position Requirements
Minimum Requirements
Masters with 5 years industry experience, a Ph.D., or 10 years industry experience required. Has demonstrated competence to research new applications of products or to develop new and improved production methods. Works with considerable independence. Extensive experience and knowledge in more than one of Master’s chosen fields or product lines. Solves complex problems. Must have demonstrated proven critical thinking and project management. Exhibits creativity and ingenuity. Experience working across multiple cultures and geographies.

Illustrative Duties
- Displays a firm commitment to safety. Follows standard operating procedures and workplace safety regulations; also identifies opportunities for improvement
- Develops/formulates new products as sanctioned by the Product Approval Committee (PAC) or in response to changes in raw material availability. Develops procedures for product manufacturing
- Evaluates and recommends approval of new raw materials, as well as, adjustments/modifications of raw materials and finished product specifications
- Coordinates R&D activities with marketing, manufacturing, technical services, quality control and health and safety departments, as well as, universities, consultants and attorneys
- Maintains complete, permanent records of all work performed and results obtained. Effectively communicates with MFS’s global laboratory managers – including China, Europe & APAC
- Supports and drives company objectives, helping Master meet and exceed customer and market expectations
- Functions as a leader for projects of the greatest complexity and/or financial impact
- Demonstrates solid influence among other technical staff and is consulted internally by business leaders regarding strategic technical direction and technical capacity
