Matchbook Learning is a non-profit charter management organization based in Indianapolis, Indiana. We operate two schools : Matchbook Learning at Wendell Phillips School 63, serving students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, and The Match High School and Career Center, which currently serves 9th grade students and will expand to include 9th and 10th grade students in the fall of 2025.

We are currently seeking a dedicated and empathetic High School Academic Counselor to join our team at The Match High School and Career Center for the 2025-2026 school year.

Position Overview

This High School Academic Counselor will play a crucial role in supporting students' academic progress, assisting with college and career readiness, and ensuring they meet graduation requirements. The ideal candidate will be skilled in providing guidance for academic planning, managing credit tracking, supporting students as they explore post-secondary options, and utilizing student portfolios to track competency attainment.

Key Responsibilities

These are the key responsibilities of a High School Academic Counselor. Academic Counselors may have other duties as assigned.

  • Academic Counseling :

Meet with students regularly to discuss academic progress, course selection, and educational goals.

  • Provide guidance on course planning, ensuring students meet graduation requirements and maintain a balanced workload.
  • Offer individualized support for students facing academic challenges, developing strategies for improvement.
  • Monitor student academic performance and assist with interventions for struggling students, including referrals to tutoring, special education services, and other resources.
  • Credit Tracking & Graduation Requirements :
  • Track student credits and ensure they are on track to meet graduation requirements.

  • Regularly update and maintain accurate records of student transcripts, grades, and credit accumulation.
  • Work closely with administration to prepare and submit student graduation reports.
  • Provide guidance to students and families about credit recovery options when necessary.
  • Tracking Competency Attainment (Student Portfolios) :
  • Monitor and track student progress through their portfolios, focusing on competency-based learning and achievement.

  • Ensure students are meeting required competencies in key subject areas, documenting attainment through portfolio-based assessments and reflections.
  • Collaborate with teachers and administration to ensure that competency goals are being met and reflected in student portfolios.
  • Provide support for students who need additional help to attain specific competencies, ensuring timely intervention and support strategies.
  • College & Career Readiness :
  • Assist students with post-secondary planning, including college applications, scholarships, and financial aid processes.

  • Provide information on college admission requirements, standardized testing (e.g., SAT, ACT), and career exploration resources.
  • Coordinate and lead workshops on college and career readiness, including resume writing, interview skills, and application processes.
  • Help students identify potential career paths and post-graduation opportunities, including internships, apprenticeships, and vocational training.
  • Foster relationships with local colleges, universities, and businesses to expand student opportunities.
  • Collaboration & Communication :
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to ensure student success and resolve any academic concerns.

  • Maintain open communication with parents / guardians regarding student progress, credit status, and college / career goals.
  • Provide counseling and support for students facing personal or emotional challenges that may impact their academic performance.
  • Assist with planning and organizing school events such as college fairs, career days, and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Other Responsibilities :
  • Stay informed about current trends in college admissions, financial aid, and career opportunities.

  • Participate in professional development and school meetings to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Support the overall student wellness and development, contributing to a positive school culture.
  • Requirements

  • Master's degree in School Counseling, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Current certification or licensure as a school counselor in Indiana.
  • Experience working in a high school setting, with a focus on academic advising, college and career counseling, or student support.
  • Strong knowledge of high school graduation requirements, college admissions processes, and career development strategies.
  • Experience with competency-based learning systems and tracking student achievement via portfolios is preferred.
  • Ability to use counseling techniques to support students' personal and academic growth.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly in tracking student credits, competencies, and graduation progress.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, families, and school staff.
  • Proficiency in using student management software and tools for tracking academic records and competencies.
  • Additional Requirements
