What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Manager - Construction Testing position at Materials Testing Consultants?
POSITION SUMMARY:
For more than 50 years, MTC has focused on delivering a wide range of construction materials engineering and testing services across the Great Lakes Region. Our projects are managed by experienced Professional Engineers and Field Technicians. We are accredited to AASHTO R18 in the areas of soils, concrete, aggregates and asphalt. Our QA/QC systems and engineering management assure consistent and accurate test results.
A Field Manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations at construction sites, managing teams, ensuring safety, and maintaining project schedules. They coordinate with various stakeholders (such as Project Managers, Clients and Field Technicians) to ensure project success. This position requires common skills like organization, resource management, planning, scheduling, communication, and adaptability.
Field Managers will be working directly with Construction Materials Testing Field Technicians and will oversee and assist with the coordination of their travel to construction project sites to perform Quality Assurance testing of construction materials. Upon accurate completion of the tests, the results are documented and communicated to client field representatives. Reports are then submitted for review and processing. With guidance from the Project Manager, the Field Manager and Field Technician will assist with deficiency resolutions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Focus on overall efficiency of department and quality of on-site work
- Oversee completion of certifications for all technicians
- Acquire well-rounded knowledge of industry and serve as a resource when problem solving.
- Potentially perform soil, concrete, asphalt and masonry testing.
- Monitor and demonstrate work procedures for compliance with project specifications.
- Professional communication with client representatives (supervisor, foremen, project managers, engineers, technicians, etc.) at project sites.
- Demonstrate strong work ethic and emotional intelligence.
- Oversee proper maintenance and calibration of equipment.
- Perform other duties or functions as needed, assigned or requested.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- High School degree required; Associates or Bachelor degree with a science or STEM focus is helpful.
- 2 Years of construction field experience and/or engineering.
- Current ACI,MCA Level I, MDOT Density certifications, helpful.
- Prior management/leadership experience, helpful.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record. Must pass drug screen, physical (regular lifting up to 50 lbs) and background check.
- Ability to coordinate individual aspects of projects and team members.
- Strong communication skills.
- High ethical standards and attention to detail.

- Work environment primarily at MTC facility but may include construction sites with the possibility of challenging terrain and outdoor weather conditions.
