What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy Director, Landscape Architecture position at Matrix Design Group, Inc?
The Deputy Director of Landscape Architecture will oversee the planning, design, and implementation of landscape architecture and community design projects out of the Denver, Colorado office. This role reports to the Director of Landscape Architecture and involves managing a team of landscape architects, coordinating with other design team partners both internal and externally, and ensuring that projects are completed to the highest standards of quality.
Project and Program Management
- Leadership of Landscape Architecture and Planning services for various market sectors including parks and open space, single family and multi-family housing developments, mixed-use neighborhoods, commercial and office centers, and public facilities.
- Lead, oversee and manage Denver office landscape architecture team members, as well as active collaboration with other Matrix disciplines and offices.
- Manage multiple projects in a variety of market sectors maintaining oversight of project schedules, budgets and quality assurance.
- Maintain effective communications with project teams and clients.
- Assist the Director in preparing required reporting documentation and management reports for Matrix Leadership.
Marketing and Business Development
- Coordinate with Landscape Architecture Director and Matrix Leadership in the development and initiation of marketing and business development within the Denver Metro Area.
- Generate new and maintain existing client projects for Matrix at annual targeted rates as well as develop a robust pipeline of clients new to Matrix.
- Interact, develop and foster working relationships within the planning and design community at all levels, specifically within the Denver Metro Area and surrounding municipalities.
- Lead and participate in organizing the creation of project proposals, request for proposals, and statements of qualification for a variety of public and private project types.
- Lead and/or participate in presentations and interviews as appropriate.
- Maintain active participation in select professional societies and appropriate related agencies.
Leadership and Development
- Lead the mentoring and development of staff, providing recommendations to the Director on appropriate training and feedback on performance.
- Ensure that the staff resources are deployed in a productive and efficient manner to maintain billability at annual targeted rates.
- Conduct regular meetings to ensure that project/program needs are balanced with staff availability across the Landscape Architecture team.
Competencies:
- Knowledge of Denver Metro Area and surrounding municipalities planning review and approval process for entitlements, site development, community design and landscape architectural submittals.
- Exceptional planning, visionary design skills, and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Lumion, Sketch Up, Microsoft Internet and Excel.
- Capacity to integrate multidisciplinary project approach with planners, engineers, architects, and environmental scientists.
- Exceptional written, graphic, and public presentation skills in describing project approach, scoping, planning documents and knowledge of the construction bid administration process.
- Ability to produce both hand and computer graphics varying from conceptual sketches to technical details to convey planning and design principles and ideas.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Work with the Director in the hiring and development of the talent needed to achieve department goals. Communicate performance expectations, give and seek feedback, provide coaching, support employee development, and recognize achievement and lessons learned.
Education and Experience:
- Undergraduate or graduate degree in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and/or Planning.
- 10 years of professional experience in all phases of planning, design, and construction for notable and award-wining public and private sector projects.
- Demonstrated experience in organizing, managing and directing staff and consultants on a variety of public and private sector projects.
- Registration/Certification as a Professional Landscape Architect (PLA) in the State of Colorado. Or the ability to obtain State of Colorado licensure through reciprocity.
- Personal and professional recognition by nationally recognized professional planning and design organizations for award winning projects, publications and keynote speaking is a plus.
- Valid driver's license, in conjunction with successfully passing the Company’s MVR.
