- Role: Hospital based; In Patient Behavioral Health Unit
- Requirements: LVN/LPN with 18 months current experience or AAPT Certified Psych Tech with 12 months current experience.
- Location: NAS Jacksonville
- Schedule: Psych Tech is scheduled as follows for two week period:
- 6 total 12.5 hour shifts (30 minute uncompensated lunch)
- 1 total 8.5 hour shift (30 minute uncompensated lunch)
- Compensation: Excellent hourly compensation benefits

- Education: Graduate from an accredited community college, junior college, college, university or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by the Commission on Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) or another acceptable accreditation body.
- Experience: 18 months of practical or vocational nurse experience after graduation in inpatient psychiatric setting.
- Licensure: Current, full, active and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse.
- Degree: Certificate
- Education: Graduation from an accredited Psychiatric Technician Program; or completion of equivalent education and experience that meets the requirement of the American Association of Psychiatric Technicians or completion of education and experience as a behavioral science specialist/technician in the United States military and proof of having completed an Armed Forces course involving a psychiatric technician training or civilian course from an accredited school in the care of behavioral health patients.
- Experience: One year (1) of experience as a Psychiatric Technician after graduation.
- Provide care to mentally ill or emotionally disturbed patients and participate in rehabilitation and treatment programs.
- Manage agitated patients, including performing line-of-sight observations, and institute precautionary measures to prevent injuries such as suicide, homicide, and elopement, including performing verbal, manual, and mechanical restraints as necessary.
- Monitor, escort, and act as a therapeutic participant in patient activities in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric programs.
- Assist in conducting individual and group therapy sessions and participate in therapeutic community activities and other related milieu activities.
- Assist patients with nutritional, hygiene, and comfort measures, and obtain and record vital signs.
- Perform routine ward procedures for admissions, discharges, and patient transfers.
- Coordinate and perform routine training in the prevention and management of assaultive behavior, including physical restraint and crisis intervention skills.
- Conduct or assist in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients, including specialized treatment for mental health conditions.
- Conduct basic assessment procedures, including standardized psychological testing, clinical interviewing, mental status examinations, substance abuse evaluations, and psychological and nursing assessments.
- Prepare and maintain treatment records and reports pertaining to specialty services, including documentation per policy and communication of any abnormal or unusual findings.
- Provide care using proper infection control and safety techniques, and maintain knowledge of psychotropic medications, including actions, side effects, and dosages.
- Coordinate with other agencies and Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs) for specified care, treatment, prevention, rehabilitation, and administrative functions.
- Assist in arranging patient referrals to public, private, and military community agencies, and explain and interpret mental health services to patients and commands.
- Present or facilitate various health and wellness programs, including stress management, suicide intervention, and smoking cessation.
- Screen patients to determine presenting problems and prioritize appointments, including telephone triage or in-person evaluations.
- Provide therapeutic assessment and interview skills to elicit accurate accounts of patients' conditions, and document patient care using proper terminology.
- Observe, monitor, report, and record patient progress, including completing the restraint training course upon arrival and annually.
