About the Role
The Accountant - Matson Terminals position assists the Controller and Accounting Manager with accounting and financial matters for the Pacific Division by ensuring compliance with corporate financial policies and procedures, providing timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and safeguarding Company assets and accounts. The Accountant ensures that financial data is produced accurately and transmitted to the Phoenix Accounting Center and the Controller's reporting group in Oakland to meet deadlines for ultimate release for both internal and external (public-SEC) purposes. The Accountant is responsible for recording, analyzing, reconciling, and reporting on various expense and balance sheet accounts for MTI. The Accountant prepares journal entries, reconciliation reports, account analyses, customer billings, and collects on MTI customer bills. The Accountant supervises the accurate and timely processing of all MTI payrolls and related job cost reporting, which encompasses 14 bargaining agreements amongst 5 port locations. The Accountant works closely with accountants in Honolulu, Controller's reporting group in Oakland and the Phoenix Accounting Center to ensure that financial and statistical data are transmitted for inclusion in management reports.
What you’ll do:
- Prepares timely, accurate information to support Senior Management's decision-making processes.
- Enforces financial and accounting procedures and controls to enable accurate financial reporting requirements to safeguard Company assets and to ensure compliance with Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) requirements.
- Assists with the compilation of client prepared material for both the internal audit group and the external auditors with regards to the Stevedoring and Terminals Multiemployer Pension Plan audits, SOX compliance audits and quarterly and annual financial audits.
- Performs general ledger accounting for terminal cargo handling expenses and operations overhead expenses for Honolulu and the Big Island Stevedores (Hilo, Kawaihae, Nawiliwili, Kahului).
- Ensures that all entries are accurate, researches and corrects account coding errors, and determines the source of coding errors so that future errors are reduced or eliminated.
- Assists with the preparation of month-end and year-end financial statements and journal entries.
- Prepares analyses and account reconciliations of assigned accounts to maintain the integrity of the MTI accounting system.
- Prepares and analyzes weekly and monthly cost variance reports and provides cost variance explanations.
- Performs statistical and cost input for the Terminal Payroll & Reporting (TPR) system and publishes corresponding reports.
- Assists with the development of the annual operating and overhead budgets for MTI, including customer operations and development of operating standards.
- Trains Accounting Clerks on industry specific work rules and employment laws.
- Oversees Accounting Clerks by reviewing and approving their payroll before final submission to Corporate on a weekly basis.
- Oversees employees’ time entries in Matson’s current timekeeping system by reviewing and approving their payroll before final submission to Corporate on a bi-weekly basis.
- Organizes and performs the preparation work for each payroll including data entry items for employee maintenance, review/resolution of email submissions, logs, checklists, and items reconciled and carried forward from the previously processed payroll.
- Develops a high-level view of the full payroll life cycle from onboarding, timecard and payment processing, termination, reporting, and accounting.
- Uses various logs, checklists, and work aids and tools to ensure accurate and consistent processes including follow up with outstanding items.
- Reviews all checklists to ensure proper signoffs are included.
- Accurately performs employee maintenance items such as validation for new hires, terminations, wage adjustments, etc.
- Acts as a liaison between stevedores and human resources.
- Issues all customer bills for MTI, including lines handling work performed by the Big Island Stevedores and labor loaning performed in the neighbor islands.
- Follows up on the collection of old accounts receivable for MTI in Hawaii.

And these qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university is preferred, plus 1-2 years related experience and/or training.
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
Extra credit if you have:
- Familiarity with the stevedoring, shipping, or transportation industry, preferred.
- An understanding of Matson Terminals, Inc. (MTI) and its related companies, preferred.
