What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate position at Matthew Skornicka, CPA?
The Role
This position will start as a part-time role with the expectation of growing into a full-time position as my practice continues to expand. Over the past year and a half, my practice has grown from under 10 clients to over 100 clients and counting. I fully expect this growth to continue, and as my only associate, you will have the unique opportunity to shape your future with this practice.
You'll begin by assisting with core tasks such as basic bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax, income tax preparation, and general administrative duties. This will include:
- Managing books using QuickBooks, Zoho Books, and Excel spreadsheets
- Running payroll for clients
- Preparing sales tax and income tax returns
- Scanning and organizing documents
- Shredding confidential documents
- Onboarding new clients and creating task workflows
- Answering occasional client calls and drafting responses
- Light cleaning and maintain a professional office environment
But this role is not limited to these duties. There's incredible growth potential here, and the more you learn, the more we can pass down the duties you don't enjoy so you can focus on the ones you do enjoy.
What I'm Looking For
I'm seeking someone who is committed to continuous learning and ready to take the next step in their accounting journey. Here's what I need from you:
Requirements
- Commitment to study accounting (minimum of an associate degree) or a completed degree in accounting
- Ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn processes/tax law as necessary
- Strong attention to detail
- Professional-level grammar, spelling, and mathematical skills
- Excellent communication skills
- A love for helping small businesses succeed
- Understanding that this is a part-time role with the potential to grow into full-time
- A desire to stay local to Clare County
- The understanding that this is an in-office position with the possibility for hybrid work when certain requirements are met
- Must pass a background check
Pay and Growth Incentives
I believe in rewarding growth and skill development. Here's how our pay structure works:
- Starting pay: $15/hour
- Increases of $1 /hour with each new skill mastered or achievement. For example: Confidently handling bookkeeping in QuickBooks; Mastering Excel; Obtaining your associate degree in accounting, etc.
- This is not rewarded on a periodic basis. This is rewarded the moment you achieve it
- 5% commission of ongoing revenue for any clients brought in for the first three years the client is with us
The more you learn and contribute, the faster your pay will grow. The sky is the limit here!
The Vision
I'm building a practice that stands apart from traditional accounting firms. My goal is to create a Monday-Thursday workweek that pays 40 hours for 32-40 hours of work. I envision a practice that not only serves our clients better than anyone, but also provides a life-first balance for the team.
This role will grow alongside the practice, with a clear path to becoming a partner if you desire:
1. Obtain your CPA license (bachelor's degree required)
2. Bring in 20 new business clients and 30 new individual clients (or adopt mine)
3. Complete three years of service with the practice (much faster than the typical industry timeline of 10 years)
4. Tell me the fifth state of matter in your application to show you've read this and to be considered, yes, you can Google it
5. Reasonable buy-in options that ensure you're well-compensated from day one

- Paid-for CPA exam study materials
