EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Part-time, Non-Exempt.
POSITION TITLE: Janitor
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations and Visitor Experience
SCHEDULE: Mondays or Tuesdays (9 AM – 5 PM), and two additional, flexible early mornings before 11 AM, totaling roughly 15-20 hours per week.
RATE OF PAY: $17.00 per hour
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Janitor ensures all areas of the Mattress Factory campus, including all indoor spaces, are clean, well-maintained, and ready to welcome staff and visitors. Cleaning is primarily performed when the museum is closed to the public (Monday and Tuesday) or before operating hours (before 11 AM) on other days. The successful candidate will be reliable, proactive, and professional when interacting with staff, visitors, and external vendors. The Janitor will also assist with maintaining outdoor areas, such as the parking lot and garden, in coordination with a landscaping service.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
Responsible for the following cleaning duties across Mattress Factory campus (including three public gallery buildings, administrative offices and artist residence building).

Indoor Cleaning and Maintenance
- Clean and maintain all public gallery buildings, administrative offices, and the artist residence building.
- Perform routine cleaning tasks, including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and polishing floors.
- Dust surfaces, and clean doors and door frames in high-touch areas.
- Clean and sanitize sinks, mirrors, and toilets in restrooms.
- Stock restroom supplies and ensure dispensers are functional.
- Gather and dispose of trash from indoor and outdoor receptacles to designated collection bins.
- Change lightbulbs as needed.
- Stay informed about long- and short-term installations to adhere to specific cleaning requirements or restrictions.
- Maintain an orderly supply area and notify the supervisor when inventory is low.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Prepare rooms between guest stays, including cleaning shared restrooms and performing laundry tasks for linens and towels.
- Regularly clean common areas of the residence including kitchen and living areas.
- Perform light outdoor maintenance, such as removing litter from the parking lot and walkways.
- Collaborate with landscaping services to ensure the garden and surrounding areas remain well-kept and inviting.
- Basic handyperson skills, including small building repairs, painting, and other light maintenance tasks.
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Previous laborer or janitorial experience, preferably in a museum or residential setting
- An interest in contemporary art
- Walking
- Walking up and down stairs
- Standing, bending, and moving for extended periods of time
- Ability to lift 50 lbs
- Ability to use ladder
- Ability to do limited work outdoors year round
