What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Geologist position at Maul Foster & Alongi?
Staff Geologist - Portland, OR
Maul Foster & Alongi, Inc. (MFA) is seeking an entry-level Staff Geologist to join our team. This role offers hands-on experience across geology, environmental assessments, and remediation projects. Working closely with seasoned environmental professionals, you'll build a strong foundation in consulting through a balance of dynamic fieldwork and focused office tasks. Seventy percent of your time will be spent outdoors, conducting rounds of sampling and working directly in the field to understand site conditions and contribute to impactful projects, while the remaining time will be dedicated to supporting our projects from the office.
As a Staff Geologist, you will...
become adept at performing a range of essential fieldwork tasks, from drilling and logging boreholes to overseeing the installation of monitoring wells and conducting multimedia sampling of soil, groundwater, and soil vapor. Through each of these activities, you'll be hands-on with processes that directly support environmental site assessments and remediation efforts. With a focus on quality and precision, you will ensure each project meets our standards by conducting thorough quality assurance and control reviews, both in the field and with lab data, safeguarding the accuracy of all information collected.
Back in the office, your work will focus on transforming field observations into Investigation Summary Reports, offering clear and concise insights that inform clients, project teams, and regulatory bodies. You'll refine your project management skills by tracking tasks, managing budgets, and estimating costs to align with each project's goals and schedule. Alongside project managers, you'll ensure smooth coordination between field and office efforts, fostering strong partnerships with clients and agencies through open, professional communication.
To thrive in this role, you must have...
a Bachelor's degree in Geology or a related field. Advanced qualifications, such as a Master's degree or a Geologist-in-Training certification, are preferred. While prior field experience, especially in Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), is an advantage, we value a readiness to learn and grow in the field. Strong technical abilities are essential, particularly proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook), and the analytical skills to interpret data, conduct statistical analyses, and solve discipline-specific challenges.
Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are key to crafting clear reports and conveying technical information with clarity. We're looking for a team-oriented individual who can work independently but also thrive in a collaborative environment. Candidates should be capable of meeting the physical requirements of fieldwork, including lifting equipment and navigating rugged terrain. A valid driver's license and the willingness to travel regionally are required, along with the ability to obtain HAZWOPER 40-hour certification after joining.
