Mauldin & Jenkins, LLC is seeking an Associate Tax Attorney for their Tax Controversy Resolution Department. We are a Top 100 CPA Firm and have been one continuous entity since 1918.
The Associate Tax Attorney will deal in tax controversy and resolution matters. The cases an Associate Tax Attorney could work include matters related to notices received by clients, tax examinations, and appeals of tax matters to the IRS. Specifically, the Associate Attorney works with other Tax Controversy Resolution members in handling IRS Notices, making phone calls to the IRS regarding these notices, preparing written correspondence to the IRS such as Reasonable Cause penalty removal letters, and Information Document Request responses to IRS Audit Letters. The Associate Attorney receives support from the tax controversy team in connection with the Firms tax controversy practice on both the federal and state levels.
Responsibilities:
- Communicate and work well with other Tax Controversy Resolution team members
- Work diligently under the supervision of partners and directors
- Interact attentively with representatives from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and State revenue agencies
- Handle IRS Notices, case evaluation, risk assessment, and counseling on various complicated tax problems
- Accurately track time spent on each case
- Manage workflow, complete tasks daily, ensure deadlines are satisfied, and ensure work is performed accurately, thoroughly, and documented in the firms case management system
- Prepare correspondence and legal documents distributed to the IRS and state revenue agencies
- Utilize Bloomberg and other applicable platforms to conduct legal research
Qualifications:
- Preferred 1-3 years of tax controversy experience in a law firm or accounting firm but not required
- Must provide a cover letter demonstrating your legitimate interest in tax law
- Have an active Bar license; accounting degree, CPA license, or Masters in Taxation Law preferred but not required
- Proficiency in Adobe and MS Office with expertise in Word and Excel
- Competency in solving unique problems and working as part of a team
- Detail-oriented and comfortable working in a fast-paced office environment
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Superior organization skills and dedication to completing projects on time
- Ability to work effectively, efficiently, and collaboratively with other team members in a professional manner
