Position Overview
The Academic Support Specialist has a critical role in the school by supporting each scholar in achieving his education goals through active support in the classrooms, in study halls, and in one-on-one tutoring assistance. The Academic Support Specialist will be the primary onsite substitute teacher.
Requirements:Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Provide academic support as a classroom assistant during assigned times in the classroom and study hall
- Work with scholars assigned to credit recovery classes based on individual scholar schedule needs
- Work with post-secondary/college prep scholars during their individual schedule time on credit recovery courses, SAT prep, and other pull-out classes as needed
- Support the Instructional Team as a substitute teacher where coverage is needed
- Attend all Instructional Team meetings
- Maintain Academic Data board with updated data each unit
- Participate in a wide range of school activities, including off-site retreats, family days, and school celebrations.
- Other duties as assigned

- Bachelor’s degree in related field
- Experience with working with opportunity youth in an educational environment
- Ability to motivate others and work as part of a team
- Ability to think critically and analytically
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills
Site Description
The Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings is a long-term juvenile facility in Laurel, MD. It serves youth ages 13-21 and is located inside New Beginnings Youth Development Center. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.

With the support of a wide circle of caring adults, students will develop the skills they need to make sound decisions and lead rewarding lives.
Salary and Benefits
Our salaries are comparable to those of other public schools in the District of Columbia area.
