Position Title: In-School Detention Assistant
Pay Grade: 7 Period of Employment: 9.5 months

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Administrators
General Responsibilities: Supervise and monitor students assigned to in-school detention, in-school suspension, after school detention, and lunch detention programs.
Essential Duties:

- Diffuses conflict between students.
- Provides supervision and care for students assigned to in-school detention or suspension, lunch detention, or after school detention.
- Monitors assignments and provides instructional assistance as needed or obtains additional instructional assistance when necessary.
- Receives students scheduled by the administration for in-school detention.
- Reschedules detention by working with the teacher and administrator.
- Inputs attendance or reports attendance to the office in a timely manner.
- Notifies or follows up with teacher when a student is assigned in-school detention or suspension, after school detention, or lunch detention.
- Provides classroom coverage as needed.
- Refers behavioral issues to the school’s administration, guidance, and truancy.
- Maintains the school radios, ensures they work properly, and trains staff on their use (may vary by school).
- Assists in ensuring that hall duty stations are covered.
- Uses the tenants of “Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS)” to ensure students are safe, respectful, and responsible.
- Works with TDT counselors.
- Assists with cafeteria duty coverage as required.
- Assists with bus duty as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of school and classroom rules, procedures, and practices.
- Knowledge of conflict resolution techniques.
- Ability to maintain a disciplined, academic environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills needed to communicate with teachers in order to compile assignments for students assigned to In-School Detention.
- Ability to react and exercise good judgement in unpredictable situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and parents.
- Willingness to resolve issues as they occur and to work with building administrators to handle disciplinary problems.
- Ability work well with others and be flexible.
- Ability to establish rapport with the students and exercise patience.
- Positive attitude and the desire to assist students with special needs.
- Serve as role model.
Requisite Education and Experience:
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Must possess a minimum of 60 college credits; or an associate’s degree or higher; or a passing score on the Para Pro Assessment.
- Must have experience working with students with special learning or disciplinary needs.
Physical Requirements:
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
